What’s the difference between accessibility and usability?

Accessibility is about whether people, including those with disabilities, can use your product at all.

Usability is about how easily and pleasantly they can use it.

A website can be usable for most and completely unusable for someone using a screen reader or keyboard.

Real usability includes accessibility.

Anything less is just good UX for some.

@neurovagrant in that case, two more tips!

1. Go into the settings>accessibity and turn on “show while mirroring” to control whether zoom appears while sharing your screen and during screen recordings. On iOS it’s towards the bottom of zoom settings on mac OS it’s under advanced settings.

2. Second accessibility tip that will benefit everyone when you demo:
Change your mac OS curser “pointer” size and colour to make it easier for learners to find it on your screen. Settings > Accessibility > Display > Pointer

Just did a quick demo GIF so you can see how much it helps find the pointer against black or white backgrounds even on smaller screens.

may i ask what would help those who use text captions to access visuals on this site? would you want an objective, bare description of the image, without my subjective interpretation? do you want both, but demarcated? #accessibilitytips

(feel free to boost! i am genuinely curious!)

I love how easy it is to add to images and videos on Mastodon. Such a big difference to . Please consider taking the time to fill it in. It gets faster and easier the more you do it, and it makes a huge difference for folks using screen readers. Also make it a habit to capitalise first letters in hashtags that have multiple words.

@feditips on one of my first days here, I saw a tip someone shared to titlecase or camelcase your hashtags so screenreader users here can more easily understand what they’re reading. I’ve seen so many tips since then and I just really love how important things like that are to people here.

@andrewt @Lee_in_Iowa if the text readers render them differently it's a problem, no point in guessing - ask the community!

If you want to support people who use screen readers, don't boost posts that have images with no image description.

Hi ! #AccessibilityMastodon #Accessibility #AccessibilityTips #ScreenReader
When describing images in my native language, how should I format the translations ? I want my photos to be accessible to English and French speaking communities. I was putting French and English one after the other but it does not seem to be a good idea. @Blanche seems to make a separate post with a translation every time. What are your thoughts ? 🤔
