Mose Allison - Creek Bank

An older friend offered me some records she was going to toss, and this is one.

Mose is mostly a pianist (on this record), but sings as well, and played with a lot of the greats. The Clash covered one of his songs.

This 1958 Prestige recording was a year into his solo career, including Addison Farmer (bass, Art's twin brother), and Ronnie Free (drums), featuring some blues, swing, and hard bop.

3/4 a purple-tinted shot of Mose. The top is white with title and artist.

The black LP plays on a Miniot Wheel behind.

Teo Macero with the Prestige Jazz Quartet, Teo, 1957 on Prestige

Macero is likely best known as the producer of both Bitches Brew and Time Out but he was also a great saxophone player and composer. He made multiple albums with Mingus and cofounded the Jazz Composers Workshop. Here he is joined by Addison Farmer (bass), Jerry Segal (drums), Mal Waldron (piano), and Teddy Charles (vibes). Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder.

My copy is a Vinyl Me, Please reissue from 2024 produced by Craft Recordings, with lacquers cut by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, and a listening notes book by Jason Diamond supplementing the original sleeve notes by Bob Altshuler. (Craft reproduces the Prestige labels but adds a catalog number CR00770; VMP adds the VMP Classics gold logo on the rear jacket).

Mose Allison, Down Home Piano, 1966 on Prestige

This 1966 release collects instrumental performances from six albums he released on Prestige in the late 50s and early 60s. There’s a similar Mose Allison Sings which collects “the vocal side of his talents.”

The performers include Allison, Addison Farmer (Art Farmer’s twin brother) on bass, and Ronnie Free / Nick Stabulas on drums. Liner notes by Jack McKinney, recordings by Rudy Van Gelder.

My copy, via La Fin Du Vinyle in Montreal QC, is an early 70s reissue “Remastered for Stereo.”
