Antec expands its handheld gaming business (with another rebranded AYANEO device)
The Antec Core Micro is a tiny handheld game console with a 3.5 inch, 960 x 640 pixel IPS LCD display, a MediaTek Helio G99 processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a 2600 mAh battery and an Android-based operating system.
It’s also not an entirely new device: it’s basically a rebranded version of the AYANEO Pocket Micro that launched earlier this year. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing – Antec is a Taiwanese PC hardware maker that’s been around for nearly four decades and which has a much longer, better track record of supporting its products than AYANEO, a relatively new Chinese company that’s only been around for a few years.
That said, the Antec version is actually a little more expensive than the AYANEO-branded model: you can still pre-order an AYANEO Pocket Micro with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for $231 through an Indiegogo InDemand campaign, while Antec is charging $284 for a model with the same specs.
The Antec Core Micro measures 156 x 63 x 18mm (6.14″ x 2.48″ x 0.71″) and weighs 233 grams. It features dual analog sticks with hall sensors, a D-Pad, and shoulder buttons.
This isn’t Antec’s first handheld – the company actually now has handheld pages on its main website and on the Antec Play store. But so far it doesn’t look like Antec is making its own devices, because the other handheld it offers is a different AYANEO product.
Earlier this year, Antec partnered with AYANEO to release a branded version of the AYANEO Slide that Antec calls the Antec Core HS. In that case though, Antec is actually selling the handheld for less than the price AYANEO charges.
Antec Core HS
You can pick up an Antec Core HS Windows-powered handheld with a 6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel IPS LCD display that slides upward to reveal a physical keyboard, an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage for just $499 at time of publication. AYANEO charges $699 for a model with thee same specs.
Antec also has a 32TB/2TB version priced at $700, while AYANEO charges $799 for a 32GB/512GB model.
