The beautiful Toolache Wallaby ( macropus greyi) , as illustrated by Henry Constantine Richter in John Gould's "Mammals of Australia", published between 1845 and 1863.

This wallaby was to be found in South Australia and Victoria. The last sighting in the wild took place in 1924, and the last Toolache Wallaby in captivity died in 1939.

The image depicts two wallabies in a natural setting. The animal in the foreground is standing upright, with its powerful hind legs and long tail visible, while the other is sitting on the ground, facing the viewer. Both have a light gray coat with a slightly darker face and a lighter underbelly. The standing wallaby has its head turned to the side, and its ears are perked up, suggesting alertness. The sitting wallaby has its head lowered, possibly grazing or resting. The background features a landscape with a body of water, distant hills, and sparse vegetation, including tall grasses and reeds. The colors are soft and naturalistic, with a muted palette of greens, grays, and blues. The text at the bottom of the image reads "Halmaturus Gregii Gray," indicating the then scientific name of the species.

"After analyzing the skull, and comparing it with other fossils on record, the team determined it belonged to an extinct order of mammals called hyaenodonta — fearsome carnivores who evolved before modern-day cats, dogs and hyenas.

"Because of its cat-like teeth structure, the team decided to call it Bastetodon, after the cat-headed ancient Egyptian goddess Bastet, who symbolizes protection, pleasure, and good health."

Pteranodon longiceps

Every November the 30th is Lost Species Day, in remembrance of the species we lost in recent times. This artwork of the Hokkaido Wolf sat for quite some time on my harddrive, until I finally got to finish it. The Hokkaido Wolf was one of two endemic Japanese wolf species. Once in the Japanese agricultural society it was regarded as a guardian to the crops. Only to then be mercilessly hunted to extinction. #lostspeciesday #extinction #extinctanimals #MastoArt #DigitalArt #wolfart #artwork #art

One of the projects that means a lot to me: Lost Zoo - illustrations dedicated to recently extinct animals. Like the Schomburgk's Deer. Drawing as elaborate like this one feel sometimes futile to me, as they usually don't get as much attention. #MastoArt #extinct #extinctanimals #extinction #digitalart #sciart #natureart #illustration #art
