One of the weirder moves by #Hegesth.

Personally (as both a #peace activist and a scouting alum), I think #Scouting may be better off without the military support in the long-term, but the rationale given for this is just bizarre.

The part of this that does concern me is that this policy would also bar Scout troops from meeting on military bases, a real problem for young people living on overseas military bases with a military parent. It seems unjust to deprive these kids of the opportunities of Scouting, just because because of Hegseth's gender paranoia and insecurities.

I am incredibly proud of my son. With the logistical help of his mother (car rides, handling money, etc.), he just sold $3,000 worth of popcorn for his Boy Scout troop fundraiser on his own. In four days. No having parents selling product on his behalf at workplaces, just good 'ole salesmanship at a great front-of-store location.

I think the thing that amazes me the most was that this was done during a period of food safety uncertainty. Dirty secret: those less likely to be able to afford a $25 bag of popcorn are the first in line to buy because their hearts aren't made of stone. The purchases and cash donations help my son's BSA troop and veterans.

Next year, I'll publish a web link for his sales (they ship online orders, the salted carmel corn is really good). I didn't think it appropriate this year given there are people in the lurch due to SNAP defunding.

Plunket is a contemptible human being who platforms hateful concern trolling, in the style of Cameron Slater. So on one level I'd love to see the BSA throw the book at him. But as with the case against Slater, there are deeper principles at stake here.

Manifest vraagt aandacht voor problemen studenten

Zorg ervoor dat wij goed kunnen leren, staat in een manifest van vier belangenorganisaties van studenten en leerlingen. Ze hebben het dinsdag aan de Tweede Kamer overhandigd.

Onderwijs zou een groot thema moeten zijn in aanloop naar de verkiezingen van 29 oktober, vinden studentenorganisaties ISO, LSVb en JOBmbo, en scholierenorganisatie LAKS. Daarom schreven ze samen een manifest.

‘Studenten en scholieren groeien op in een land waar de prestatiedruk hoog ligt, kansen ongelijk verdeeld zijn, de mentale problemen onder studenten en scholieren toenemen en veel studenten moeite hebben om rond te komen’, staat erin.

Zweten

De vier organisaties eisen onder meer een hogere basisbeurs en verplichte stagevergoedingen. Ook moet de politiek discriminatie in het onderwijs bestrijden en het onderwijs beter toegankelijk maken.

Verder hekelen ze de prestatiedruk op scholieren en studenten. ‘We moeten af van zweten, weten en vergeten. Wend de aandacht af van het cijfer en breng het terug naar het leerproces.’ Ze richten hun pijlen onder meer op het centraal eindexamen in het voortgezet onderwijs, dat minder zwaar zou moeten wegen.

Felle politieke discussies

In het hoger onderwijs willen ze het “bindend” studieadvies (bsa) aan het einde van het eerste studiejaar afschaffen, zodat studenten niet meer worden weggestuurd als ze onvoldoende punten behalen. Veel hogescholen hebben het bsa overigens al versoepeld.

De eisen in het manifest komen zeker niet uit de lucht vallen. De politiek praat al jaren over het welzijn van studenten en over de financiële problemen van jongeren. De basisbeurs is acht jaar lang stopgezet en keerde in 2023 terug. Ook het bsa leidt steevast tot felle politieke discussies.
