The Jam, “The Jam” EP, 1981

#TheJam’s early albums delivered sharp #PowerTrio punch, but to me, the songs felt a little too jagged, saddled with ungainly lyrics, and impenetrably British - not just in accent but in attitude. Then came this #EP, a collection of non-lp singles and b-sides, with its new textures and tempos, and it was my way in.

#PaulWeller’s love of soul had the first track blasting in aloft a horn section. Next, slithering in on a sinuous #BassLine, "Tales from the Riverbank," the track that was for me the key, added a whole new texture and served as the perfect lead-in for "Funeral Pyre," which came on like a pile driver - jagged, yes, but with its own almost funky bass line. Finally, the obligatory Who cover, “Disguises,” an easy win, perfectly executed, and “Liza Radley," elevated in this context by clearly recalling another Who track, “Mary Anne with the Shaky Hands.”
