Cancer care is increasingly guided by precision data, such as patients metabolomic, genetic, transcriptomic, or immune status. This poses a challenge for clinicians to communicate treatment decisions. To bridge this gap we therefore developed, evaluated, and adopted visual treatment timelines for cancer patient education. Data visualizations help humans to understand data and are especially effective to communicate risks, uncertainties, or large data and have proven to be a suitable help in cancer communication.

🚨 tomorrow, 15th of October at 5pm Berlin/4pmLondon:
“Collaborating with Biomedical AI through Visual Explanations and Interactive Guidance“ - a talk by
Qianwen Wang, Univ Minnesota

Link: biovis.net/2025/meetup/ (right under picture)
Abstract: see alt-text

Annoucement for all talks, on Wednesday the speaker talks about: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has advanced at a rapid pace and is expected to revolutionize many biomedical applications. However, current AI methods are usually developed via a data-centric approach regardless of the usage context and the end users, posing challenges for domain users in interpreting AI, obtaining actionable insights, and collaborating with AI in decision-making and knowledge discovery.
In this talk, I discussed how this challenge can be addressed by combining interactive visualizations with interpretable AI. Specifically, I present two methodologies: 1) visualizations that explain AI models and predictions and 2) interaction mechanisms that integrate user feedback into AI models. Despite some challenges, I will conclude on an optimistic note: interactive visual explanations should be indispensable for human-AI collaboration. The methodology discussed can be applied generally to other applications where human-AI collaborations are involved, assisting domain experts in data exploration and insight generation with the help of AI.

@Einstein_Berlin @ElisabethBik @PubPeer @maxplanckgesellschaft @PLOS @bih_charite @BerlinUAlliance

We are enormously grateful for this recognition - of work that started while sitting hours and hours at the microscope >10 years ago, accompanied me in generally thinking about biological data visualization & presentation, and resulted in dedicating my life now to teaching, training, & researching this! We are very happy!

I do prefer to show up early at parties to be greeted instead of having to greet everyone myself 😁

But the #datavis mastodon party already looks well underway, so ... #firstpost:

Hi! I'm Klaus. I'm a #datavis and #biovis researcher and PhD student at the Johannes Kepler University Linz in Austria.
My main research focus are tools for domain experts to analyze and compare #cancer patient cohorts.

I spend my spare time with my dogs, gaming, cooking, and going to a lot of rock+metal concerts.

And another @distillpub@twitter.com mention at - carefully explaining your topic is always welcome in talks even if it was explained in the conference earlier, since people may switch conference tracks, skip a session - or maybe you're a better explainer 😁
