Atlassian sent email that they are going to mass-delete Free workspaces from Bitbucket. According to the email:

"If your Free Bitbucket workspace is empty and doesn't contain repositories:
◦ It has been scheduled for deletion. No action is needed.

• If your Free Bitbucket workspace contains repositories but hasn't been visited in the past 6 months:
◦ We'll deactivate these workspaces on January 15, 2026, making all content inaccessible. To keep your workspace, sign in before May 15, 2026, and click Reactivate workspace. After this date, any inactive workspaces will be permanently deleted, along with their content."

Essentially things are getting bad for anyone who doesn't remember that they still have older personal projects stored on Bitbucket, as people will lose their old repositories, unless doing a manual workaround.

It seems #Atlassian is terminating free and abandoned accounts in #BitBucket based on the email I got. Good thing that I moved all my repos to @Codeberg last year. Not only #Codeberg aligns more with my values, but they are way more transparent.

If you have an account on Bitbucket, perhaps it is time to move away your repos. Codeberg has a nice migation tool that automatically and cleanly imports your repo and wiki.

For a long time, #GitHub was the dominant hosting platform for #FOSS (#OpenSource and #FreeSoftware), and #Bitbucket tried to compete with them.

Looks like both companies are determined to end this era:

First, GitHub started shoving all this AI crap down people's throats. Realizing they probably haven't alienated *everyone* in the FOSS community yet, they now decided to charge money for CI/CD even if you run the build runner on your own machine.

Meanwhile, #Atlassian gets creative as well: Bitbucket will no longer support forking repos to other projects, and this prevents outsiders from contributing easily to projects. They say the change helps with enterprise features like data residency. That may be true, but I say it also means "goodbye, FOSS".
