Finally having that moment where someone wants to join Mastodon and I'm torn on telling them to come here or recommending they go to a different instance with more of the #BlindTwitter reach since that's what's prompting them to join. I have no idea how to really determine whether my server is doing well in the fediverse. I'm pulling in hashtagged introduction posts, public posts from most of the instances we're clustered around, and a few other hashtags, but I have a feeling that because the actual user base is so small, the effective list of followed users is also small. And, this is kind of a catch-22 situation I suppose, but at least if people move here, they bring existing followers here too. Ugh, overthinking.

@chartier yes it's been taken over by many bad elements but there are many still there because that is all they know. I'm thinking of Iranian protesters who have been getting the word out to the world via that platform. I'm thinking of #BlackTwitter who, as far as I know, have not begun migrating in large numbers to another platform. And I think of members of #BlindTwitter/VI who are still there.

The danger of Twitter for me is largely existential. The danger of Twitter for some of these groups is 100% real and already impacting virtual and real lives.

I will continue to visit Twitter and offer assistance as I can.

@chartier Interesting and thoughtful article. Thanks for sharing. There's a distinct possibility that Twitter will not be replaced one for one, but rather it's users will spread to the four winds. A federated network like Mastodon would be nice, but it's certainly not certain.

But while Twitter still persists, we need to still fight for those communities that are still there, communities that took years to build and will likely take years to build elsewhere - if they are rebuilt at all.

That's why I think that we should still engage at some level but also collectively assert our power there. I propose that we collectively boycott Twitter every Tuesday, replacing our profile photos with this graphic, and slowly build support. If we can grow this, Twitter and its advertisers will see its effect in its analytics and maybe start to rollback some of the terrible decisions made in the past few week. #TwitterlessTuesday

Personally, I still go back from time to time to assist #BlindTwitter/VI and other marginalized groups still there.

Looks like my Focus 40 Blue #BrailleDisplay has bit the dust after just 3 months of use. Unit arbitrarily turns off at random intervals. I've tracked down the likely culprit to a wiggly power switch which activates of its own accord. Exceedingly poor timing given I'm in the middle of the last 3 weeks of my semester, but not much I can do about it.
