Perched in Still Light

I believe this is a female Blue Dasher dragonfly (Pachydiplax longipennis). I spotted her during one of our morning walks a few years back.

"Perched on the tip of a sunlit reed, a female Blue Dasher dragonfly (Pachydiplax longipennis) balances in studied stillness. Her slender abdomen, unlike the icy blue of her male counterpart, glows with golden-yellow tones striped in black, like a miniature wasp painted in watercolor. Each segment tapers with fine precision, the yellow fading to a darker hue near the tip—delicate but purposeful.

Her thorax is a mottled mix of warm olive and chestnut, brushed with dusty greens, while two pairs of transparent wings stretch outward like panes of stained glass, veined and gossamer-light. They catch the morning sun in flecks of silver. Her large compound eyes, a shifting mosaic of earthy tones, take in the world in silent, panoramic clarity.

Blue Dashers at Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve

The pond at Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve turned into a stage for the Azure Bluets (Enallagma aspersum) and Blue Dashers (Pachydiplax longipennis). Both were fun to watch.

Blue Dashers at Van Horne Retention Pond

After the disappointing visit to Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve, I decided to stop at the retention pond at Van Horne Park. On the 45-minute drive home, my mind drifted, and I had a brief conversation with myself about bacon.

A Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis). I'm fairly sure this is a dasher and not a Great Blue Skimmer given its smaller size and the hint of orange at the base of the wings.

Some places have guard dogs. In Vermont, we knew of places with guard geese. My crops garden has a guard blue dasher, except it must have been off duty when someone reached over the fence and broke off the tops of all of the collards.
