👀 Look out, North Wales! The UK thinks it's a grand idea to put a tiny nuclear reactor right in your backyard. Because nothing says "job creation" like potentially glowing in the dark 🌟.

#TrungQuoc #TauSanBay #HatNhan #QuanSu #China #AircraftCarrier #NuclearReactor #Military #NONE

What do Pictish stones, a Lego broch, and a nuclear reactor control room have in common? They all live in a wonderfully eclectic museum in #Thurso.
The North Coast Visitor Centre explores all things #Caithness, from fossils to contemporary art.

A whimsical scene made of Lego: We see a cylindrical grey building with two concentric walls and a conical brown (thatched) roof. The cutaway front shows the interior with three floors, several lego people, and cattle on the ground floor. On the middle floor a beaming lego housewife stands by a hearth gripping a fish. Just outside the broch a serious looking lego man is focusing on his work (I can't tell what he's doing – perhaps forging a sword?). The landscape features green lego moorland, a brown path, a few pink and yellow flowers, and a bit of sandy lego beach. The Ulbster Stone from the 8th or 9th century is covered with carvings. A central cross with interlaced knots is flanked by 8 Pictish symbols. Clockwise from top right we see a crescent & V-rod, beast (possibly a lion), double disc, double crescent, serpent or dragon (or serpent with wolf head), step, fish, Pictish beast (a mythical creature said to resemble a seahorse, dolphin, dragon, or elephant).Control desk of the Dounreay Materials Testing Reactor. A pale green crescent-shaped desk is festooned with dials, gauges, buttons, and a black dialup telephone. On the wall behind it are more panels, warning indicators, and rows of black labels and red buttons. The Dounreay site is now being decommissioned.

There is one pool type #nuclear research reactor in Greece. Its construction started in 1959 and its operation in 1961. It is located at the National Centre for Scientific Research (#Demokritos) in Athens and it generated 5 MW of power.

It was shut down in 2004. Initially for an upgrade to 10 MW power, but it was not followed up and the reactor is currently under decommissioning.

Details on the #INRASTES webpage:

Israeli evacuation threat targets area around Iran’s Arak heavy-water nuclear reactor

As part of negotiations around the 2015 deal, Iran agreed to sell off its heavy water to Western countries. Even the US purchased some 32 tonnes of heavy water for more than $8m in one deal.

IAEA inspectors reportedly last visited Arak on May 14.

I think I must be missing something, with all the news I've heard, and read, about Israel/US, dropping bombs, and firing missiles, at a nuclear plant, I've not heard anyone mention anything about nuclear fallout.

Surly bombs, missiles, or anything explosive, does not bode well, at a nuclear power station/reactor/plant?

End of #nuclear in #Taiwan fans energy security fear
Taiwan will turn off last #nuclearreactor, fuelling concerns over island reliance on imported energy and vulnerability to blockade by #China. Nuclear power once provided jalf of Taiwan's energy, with three plants operating six reactors across an island that's 394 km (245 mi) long and 144 km (89 mi) wide. Island depends almost entirely on imported #fossilfuels to power homes, factories & critical #semiconductor industry.

@vwdasher

By all means, keep the policy that people hate. Even the people who like the idea of nuclear reactors hate the idea of them being built in their neighbourhood or their spent fuel being stored nearby.

A hole in protective shell over the Chernobyl reactor poses risks.

For weeks, the Ukrainian authorities have been looking for ways to repair a large hole in the protective shell that covers the fourth reactor of the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear plant. When it was erected in 2019, the giant shell was one of the biggest structures ever moved by humans.

On 14 February, a Russian drone hit the structure.

New paper, just published in Physical Review X Energy, on the muography of the G3 nuclear reactor

by Baptiste Lefevre and co-authors

The visualization software I developed for contributed in the mapping of the inner, inaccessible structure of the reactor.

A screenshot captured on the frontpage of the Physical Review X Energy webpage showing an article thumbnail image, title, summary and other details. Title reads "3D Reconstruction of a Nuclear Reactor by Muon Tomography: Structure Validation and Anomaly Detection". Summary reads "Muon tomography, a non-invasive technique that can be used to image large, inaccessible structures, is combined with machine learning to create a 3D reconstruction of a historical nuclear reactor that reveals material density variations, including potential anomalies in the graphite core." Dated 28 January, 2025.
