Silicon Valley’s alliance with Donald Trump has brought me to my breaking point with US tech.

I’m going to keep pushing for governments to get serious about digital sovereignty, but in the meantime I’m looking for non-US alternatives — and will have more on what I’ll be using instead soon.

Currently in a support ticket thread with a Canadian #Hosting company trying to figure out why they list 'Nightly Backups' as a feature of the plan, but I can't access or restore to those backups myself. It's not a feature if it doesn't benefit the user.

The hosting company's internal, off-server backups are for THEM not for me.

Do better.

One of the problems with trying to move tech services to #Canadian providers.... is frankly... Canadian providers are often just not as good. I don't know what it is about the Great Canadian Inferiority Complex... but why our stuff has to consistently be just a slight notch worse in quality really eats at me.

Always just a little bit less polished. A little bit less feature complete. A tiny bit more outdated.

Grrr. Do better Canada!

Canada’s tech leaders bet the Conservative Party would form the next government.

Now that they’re poised to lose, tech executives haven’t been nearly as vocal — likely because they see Mark Carney as a potential ally.

Elon Musk’s DOGE is wreaking havoc in the US, but tech leaders in Canada want their own DOGE to do much the same.

On #TechWontSaveUs, I spoke with @jenstden to discuss the effort to bring the conservative-tech alliance north.

Been thinking/toying with trying to get some of my cloud infrastructure (hosting, vps, etc) onto Canadian companies. Surprisingly hard to find options.

Side note - it boggles my mind that Plesk/CPanel have monthly licenses that typically cost more than the hosting itself. No thanks.

Shopify executives are vocally opposing the Canadian government — and now they’re being openly praised by the Conservative Party leader.

They’re trying to extend Silicon Valley’s right-wing project to Canada — and need to be stopped.

Canadians are watching as Silicon Valley takes over the US government, but few realize Shopify executives are trying to bring a similar project to Canada — and the leader of the Conservative Party has started praising them for it.

Canada is investigating Chinese tech companies, but it should be much more concerned with how dependent we’ve become on US tech monopolies that run roughshod over our rules and laws.

In the Toronto Star, I argue it’s time for Canada to reclaim its digital sovereignty.

Use of facial recognition in vending machines at University of Waterloo to collect age & gender data. The manufacturer says the machines are GDPR complaint… but this is in Canada. Who is even liable for this? Machines manufactured by Invenda, owned by Mars, fulfilled by Adaria Vending Services Limited, housed on Waterloo campus. Who is on the hook for following privacy law?

The precedent was already set in the Cadillac Fairview case that just because the images are deleted after analysis, does not mean consent isn’t required - however that case also set the precedent that there is no punishment for doing this, just say “oops, sorry” and move on #CdnTech #CdnPoli #Privacy #GDPR

Just watched the #BlackBerry mini-series on CBC. Really entertaining look at the rise and fall of an iconic product. I loved my BlackBerry back in the day.

1) what were the rules before?

2) good luck with that:

wasn’t
“introduced”
“launched”
“adopted”
or
“released”

It was “injected”… by a handful of Billionaires (a couple of them financially backed by a sovereign immune Trillionaire)

Meta pushed out a notification to everyone in Canada (I'm assuming) about the impending blocking of all news to Canadian users from their platform in response to the Online News Act.

- longer view or share news on Facebook and Instagram
- People in Canada will no longer view or share news on Facebook and Instagram
- no longer see links or content from any news outlet Pages or Accounts

With so many H-1B visa holders in the US either laid-off, or stuck at companies like Twitter because their visa is tied to their employer, Canada created a new work permit specifically to poach those tech workers, with the program set to run for 1 year or until 10k applicants apply #CdnTech

On Day 1 the 10k applicant cap was reached
