Latest nerd accomplishment - got Open Media Vault installed on this diy NAS with overkill hardware, AMD FX6350, 12GB RAM, and super quiet. Now comes the hard part, getting it configured so it does something useful. All I want it to do is backups of orders in progress, and as a local music streaming server, so shouldn't be that difficult (hoping that writing this doesn't jinx it, lol).

In the corporate fields of #computers and #software, in particular, decisions about product design and availability on the market are made by corporate bosses at the behest of other corporate bosses, perhaps in concert with these bosses' political allies and sponsors.
The average "consumer" has no power over any of these decisions. Why for example do most people still struggle along with #Microsoft software? Generally it's because they're FORCED to do so: they go to school or to work and they're more or less ordered to use Microsoft software, and they have basically no choice in the matter. It's bosses and managers making those decisions for them, and going against the decisions is a great way to become unemployable.

Can someone explain to me the reasoning behind shipping a system that won’t boot unless a monitor is plugged in, and has no way of modifying this behavior in the BIOS/UEFI? Like, what’s the goal here other than to make it a hassle to use as a server?
I’ve got little HDMI/DisplayPort dongles that fake having a monitor connected but it seems silly that it’s necessary at all.

So my new machine is great - but - it has been hanging occasionally. Not an app hang but the entire system, mouse no movey type hang. Suspected the RAM.
Ran the memtest86+ off a mint install disk overnight and yup RAM is complaining - 94 errors after a 7 hour run. Bugger and drat! Thankfully it’s under warranty. Just have to work out which stick is dead/dying. That is the job for the weekend.
