@ActionRetro did] that's still easy given #Germany basically keeps #2G up as vestigal / emergency service in limited #SpectrumAllocation basically indefinitely because #CellBroadcast was made mandatory and #EmergencyCalling in case of disaster can only work long reliably when the cell networks downgrade to #GSM.

#NewZealand does this all the time, including restricting #calls to #EmergencyServices in cases of big earthquakes so people in need of help get prioritized whilst everyone else can send out "I'm okay!" messages via #SMS and not tie up bandwith...

#WorstCase I could test said #Narrowband capabilities with #w3m on am artificially throttled to 2400 bit/s connection...

I keep posting these until it gets boring: #Cellbroadcast received yesterday on a #OnePlus6t running #Phosh , #cellbroadcastd and #ModemManager . Just showed up, no fiddling, just using distro packages.

Although the project finished some months ago: Thanks to @NGIZero for funding work on this.

@hackaday fortunately #Germany seems.to mandate.keeping residual #2G capacity online for mandatory emergency services like #CellBroadcast and #Calling as well as #SMS.

Sadly that doesn't mean they 3 big MNOs ain't gonna invest in improving 2G availability (tho they do provide it alongside #4G / #LTE & #5G and whilst they go up against illegal signal amplifiers, they at least offer or consider offering them (tho only 4G & 5G versions!), with #O2 making it a simple, not cheap purchase of a Femtocell whereas #Vodafone seems to demand a contract on top with fees (and not just.mandatory provisions to provide access to their technicians whenever they demand it) and #DTAG / #DeutscheTelekom seems to be very reluctant to offer any remedies at all…

Personally I wished that both the 3 MNOs and @BNetzA were to encourage #Fentocells and their #installation.
After all, these things are obviously locked-down "black boxes" that tunnel everything to their network over a #VPN tunnel and it's not like a #WiFi router where people have been caught (accidentially or on purpose) misconfiguring them to use *the wrong band (s) outdoors…

And enabling at least a very vestigal and limited #2G coverage should be in the cards for them, even if that could manage only a few hundred devices and a dozen calls at the same time...

But maybe that's me who thinks that it would be in the interest for MNOs paying literally billions for frequency allocations to increase #coverage with the least amount of fuss possible...

Hmm, hat gerade um 12:00 noch jemand nen #CellBroadcast Test-Alarm von #Vodafone in Köln bekommen? (Eigentlich gibt es dafür ausgewiesene Testgebiete in MoWaS und Köln gehört nicht dazu. 🤔)

@virgil_tibbs @lostinweb Ist mir in diesem Fall egal: Alle anderen Apps (z.B. #Katwarn oder #BIWAPP) haben mich bisher gleich mehrere Male nicht gewarnt. Wir leben in einer Situation, in der ich mich vor unterschiedlichen Gefahren (Wetter, sonstige Katastrophen aller Art und leider zukünftig auch Kriege) gewarnt werden möchte. Neben #CellBroadcast ist eine App 'ne gute Idee. Wahr aber auch: Googledienste sollten gemieden werden.

Keine Frage: Ich finde #Sirenen und den #Warntag sinnvoll. Aber wie kann es sein, daß so viele Bürger in #Hamburg den #Notruf wählen? Und auch: Wieso wird #cellbroadcast nicht genutzt, um allen Handys in Hamburg schnell eine "Entwarnung" zu schicken? Oder geht das nur, wenn die Behörden wochenlang Vorlauf haben?
Und wie mögen die Notrufzentralen dann im Ernstfall überlastet sein?

Seems like BE-Alert still uses normal SMS messages instead of cell broadcast. I am curious how long this will hold in a real emergency situation when networks are saturated.

You may want to recommend them to test their #Apps with #Waydroid (which uses a google-free @LineageOS / #LineageOS ) and put then @fdroidorg / #Fdroid.

As for anything else, #CellBroadcast transmission through the 3 MNOs and all their #MVNOs has been made mandatory by @BNetzA and so far seems to work reliable.

I do hope @bbk / #BBK does improve their #Apps since having more options is always better.

Ideally they'd offer not just #RSS-Feeds per Zip-Code but also a convenient & accessible #WebApp aka. Website (which works in #LynxBrowser) so #accessibility and thus reach is maximized.

For things to work out of the box: On Qualcomm SoCs you need at least #ModemManager 1.25.1 , Debian/Mobian waits for cellbroadcastd to enter the archive

Genau das ist die Sache, @nofollownoindex ; wir hatten hier in #Hagen vor ca. 1 Jahr die Situation, dass die ,Sheriffs‘ wegen Ausfall des Notrufs 110 #CellBroadCast als Gefahrenwarnung aktiviert haben. Am #Warntag hätte diese Meldung wahrscheinlich jede*r ignoriert. Cc: @GNUmatic
