• Personally I would've expected them to build like a minimalist toybox + musl / linux to barely address the hardware and run everything through #FeX, but AFAICT they have their regular SteamOS and merely integrate #Waydroid to enable #Android - #APK support - likely to steal #developers from the #OculusQuest!

Testing PostmarketOS and Waydroid on a desktop : a fancy Linux tablet

Installing PostmarketOS on a desktop computer because I wanted to test it.

The installation process was a bit sparse but surprisingly simple and straightforward.

Using a terminal and the tail command to follow the installation log was useful because I got confused about why the installation took longer than expected.

After that was done it turned out to be a plain Gnome desktop with Alpine Linux underneath it. For some reason I had expect a mobile OS to have a dialer app but then I remembered that it does not come with one ISO installer file but specific ones for devices.

Installing Waydroid was also pretty easy for me because I had experience with that. I can imagine that when Waydroid is brand new for you it can take some time to get it up and running because it can be a little rough at the edges sometimes.

As usual the ArchLinux wiki (yes, ArchLinux) can be useful no matter which Linux distribution you are running. In this case https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Waydroid#Usage

can be two useful commands to know about for Waydroid.

Using adb with Waydroid can be useful.

Conclusion : If you have a laptop with touchscreen installing PostmarketOS and Waydroid can be beneficial and rewarding depending on your goals.

I’ve seen some people complain about Alpine Linux using “apk add <package name>” (unlike the expected “apk install <package name>”) but this can’t be a show stopper.

Of course you can probably install any Linux distribution on a laptop with touchscreen and have Waydroid on it as a Linux tablet but if you would want to volunteer to help with the development of PostmarketOS maybe this is the way.

I les aplicacions que no estan disponibles per a l'#UbuntuTouch, però sí per a #Android, es poden usar mitjançant #Waydroid, una eina de compatibilitat que es pot instal·lar fàcilment i que obre un Android #LineageOS al telèfon, on es poden instal·lar aquestes aplicacions. Això sí, el consum de bateria és més elevat (tot i que es pot posar en pausa el Waydroid en qualsevol moment per a reduir aquest consum).

Als teil des "Digital Independence Day" hab ich mein daily-driver Smartphone, ein Fairphone 5, unlocked und das Android durch ubuntu Touch ersetzt. Bis auf 2 wichtige Android Apps (Whatsapp, S-PushTAN) läuft es ziemlich gut und ich vermisse nichts. Ersteres kann ich via #waydroid laufen lassen, aber letzteres? Hat wer ne Idee wie ich die APK davon bekomme?

does anyone know what version of android #waydroid needs in order to use the notification forwarding? Im on a Oneplus 6T on #Postmarketos and I cant seem to get it to work, I read the android version needs to be upgraded but I believe i'm on the latest version.

@stiller_leser @w269 Super, c'est plus avancé que je ne le pensais.

En fait visiblement SailfishOS est fonctionnel à quelques bugs près sur FP2, FP4 et FP5, mais sans support commercial, ni accès aux applications Android pour le moment.

Par contre quelqu'un a glissé dans ce thread qu'on peut installer Ubuntu Touch sur un Fairphone 4 et y faire tourner des appli Android via l'émulateur #waydroid.

Ravi de ré-entendre parler d' #UbuntuTouch. Se serait une très bonne solution. #UBports

VALVe Lepton (basé sur Waydroid), Waydroid, Jolla Android AppSupport (dans SailfishOS).

Tous les trois reposent sur les mêmes briques, notamment les conteneurs LXC et Wayland.

Et tous les trois ont le même objectif : faire tourner des apps Android sous Linux, sans passer par une couche d’émulation complète.

Ich hoffe doch stark, dass #Lepton auch auf x86_64 #Linux kommt und nicht nur #SteamFrame exklusiv ist. Klar gibt es #Waydroid, worauf das ja basiert, nur habe ich damit sowohl auf dem #SteamDeck als auch anderen Linux Geräten von mir Probleme, vor allem hat das ganze halt keine #Steam Integration, was heißt, dass ich keine App über #Gamescope verwenden kann.
