Speculation: Is it for sending out EAS messages via the new satellite cell phone systems?

Verizon is having a big outage right now in the United States, with phones showing SOS mode for connectivity. However, my wife and I are on AT&T with iPhones and she has been unable to send or receive any texts or phone calls today and her phone has been showing SOS all day in DC, and about an hour ago, I found my phone showing SOS connectivity in an area where things are normally fine.

Is this "Verizon" outage somehow affecting AT&T as well? What we've been seeing with our phones today would seem to be quite a coincidence, if not.

Any other AT&T people seeing oddness?

Obviously the #zeebo flopped, espechally due to #Qualcomm's #BREW #OS ¹ which is basically '#JavaMobile but worse in order to circumvent #SoftwarePatents' whilst also having dogshit performance and being hard to develop for or even port games to, making it even worse than #Gizmondo or #NGage which used #J2ME.

But even in a starved market like #Brazil most households weren't gonna dump over 1 month minimum wage on an aging #3G-#Cellphone with composite video and 6-button #USB #controllers.

So yeah, blame Qualcomm for this shitshow...

And lets be honest, #Edutainment is not a cash cow because in places like #Mexico it's way easier to get even cheaper #PC|s due to #NAFTA #FreeTrade (i.e. all the stuff #refurbishers couldn't sell in the #USA anymore got offered there before being sold further south...

Needless to say the Zeebo is the strongest argument for #StopKillingGames as these devices are nearly useless these days and piracy is the only way to get / change games on it and play them these days.

Nowadays the nieche of the zeebo is served by cheap #PCs for #gaming even cheaper #Android devices and (aside from few stores like #Steam that managed to upstell a #DRM as a #feature), rampant #piracy to the point that #MobileGaming outside of #iOS is basically dead unless we account #PayToLoose #Shovelware of the "#DisguisedGambingGame" kind as "#Gaming" which is an insult even for #gambling, because there at least in theory, with a honest operator the chance of winning is greater than zero (tho I'd still disrecommend it because no gambling game is *"fair" beyond the theoretical chance of winning by the rules)...

More! We need More!
The US FCC has authorized SpaceX -StarLink to launch another 7,500 second-generation Starlink satellites, bringing its total authorization to 15,000 Gen2 satellites. Satellites will be positioned into new orbital shells at altitudes ranging from 340 km to 485 km and will support space based Internet and direct-to-cell connectivity for new mobile phone services.

The Biggest #Satellite Ever Just Reached Low-Earth Orbit, And It's Coming For Starlink
The #BlueBird6 comes in at a full 2,400 square feet, or about the size of a three-bedroom apartment. The startup believes that bigger is better, because that very size allows it to do something even Starlink can't: provide direct #5G service to your normal old #cellphone. The company hopes to put around 50 more into orbit next year, and then open up to customers shortly thereafter.

I was ready to get a new iPhone 16e, a definite upgrade, overall, to my 11 Pro Max through my longtime service provider, AT&T, but they're charging a $35 "upgrade fee" and I noped out of my cart.

I don't remember any such fees in the past, but it's been almost 6 years, and about 5 years before that, since my last new phone.

Maybe I just didn't notice back then 🤷🏿‍♂️

I'm gonna call and see what's up.

@Urban_Hermit

Incidentally, my phone is a OnePlus 6T that I bought from OnePlus back when Carl Pei was the designer. Of course he left OnePlus, which promptly enshittified. I picked up phones from his next company, Nothing, but the goddamned phones won't work with ANY network that's available to us - although they claimed that they would. So that was a thousand dollars down the drain.

I honestly don't know what I'll do when my current phone dies. I hate Apple with a burning passion that goes back to the '80s, so I won't do an iPhone. Samsung sucks, so that's out. Google is pure evil now, so I really don't want to do a pixel. I didn't have a good experience with Motorola back in the day, so I don't know that I can trust them. Correction, I know that I CAN'T trust ANY big tech company.

So...what are my options?

Oh yeah, the reason I looked this up in the first place was me being reminded of Cell Broadcast, solution used today for the emergency alerts but having more entertainment-related purposes in the early 00's. Phones back then had a section of the regular messages feature where channels could be subscribed to, kind of like the CB radio. You would enter the channel numbers and your device would listen for messages delivered to the nearest cell tower matching that channel. Those messages could be delivered instantly as they targeted specific cells, not recipients, and didn't have to wait in the regular SMS queue. Example services run by my carrier included jokes, horoscope, a newsflash, something called Graffity where anybody could post anything and some dating channels because what could possibly go wrong. I think the 050 channel was a standardized one for broadcasting the name of the nearest tower which was the equivallent of accessing your current location. Many Nokia phones had a dedicated setting for that one. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_Bro #CellPhone

Left the house to walk the dog this evening and forgot my phone, for about 5 minutes I was nervous, what if something happens? Then I remembered I've lived a lot of my life without a phone and for most of history people never had them. The dependency was disturbing, I should do it more.
