Playing Ghostwire: Tokyo has given me a new appreciation of Tokyo, and Shibuya in general.

To that end, City Beautiful recently did a video on the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing: The Shibuya Scramble Crossing in Tokyo.

"The Idea that US Downtowns could become so sought after that there would be a lack of housing didnt even cross her mind in 1960. Quite the opposite was happening"

#citybeautiful quote on Jane Jacobs

Another nice video essay from @citybeautiful of how historic preservation can be used as a weapon against the construction of new housing. Dave talks about efforts in several states to allow more housing, and how some neighborhoods and cities are trying to circumvent the laws with historic preservation.

I've gotten deeply into #UrbanPlanning in the last few years, abetted by a lifelong dream of living in #Europe. I discovered #Youtube channels like @nerd4cities, @notjustbikes, & #CityBeautiful that spelled out what makes places livable & why European #cities tend to be better.

It's changed my mind on where I'd like to live, from 'I want acres in the country' to wanting denser populations & walkability - & where city finances aren't held hostage by parking lots & roads.

This #video highlights some good & bad things about #Valencia, Spain (aka my hopeful retirement locale), but what shocked me was the 80% home ownership figure, vs 65% in the US. Americans like me tend to associate #apartments (aka #flats) with renting, but not in Europe.

There's a better way of living, and I'd like to experience it.
