I finally got around to watching The Daleks - the first Dalek story.
I'm not sure what I expected, but I actually did not expect the Thals to be peaceful. And it was interesting to see the Daleks as having understandable problems of their own.
Basically, the story is good for a one-shot, but obviously after Dalek mania, they had to be more formidable.
I like the cardboard cutout Daleks:
Peter Davison and Janet Fielding return to London and encounter some Daleks!
Adric won that blue star for winning a maths challenge and he's still wearing it three adventures later.
I finally rewatched The Caves of Androzani, and it still holds up to its high reputation.
Random thoughts:
Morgus has a number of unusual 4th wall breaks, which are jarring but they add a certain theatrical flair to the production. And they also implicitly show us that Morgus has no confidant - no trusted friend.
Robert Glenister gets a particularly juicy dual role as Salateen and his android double. They both have an intelligence and effectiveness that make you root

This might be my favorite Colin Baker story. I forgot how much I liked it.
Love the blue cape he wears. Peri’s outfit is okay, but probably should have been warmer for their surprise snow.
Is it just me, or are the funeral staff very queer coded?
Oh, that’s Clive Swift (keeping up appearances, etc), he’s delightful.
I don’t know if this 45 minute episode thing will catch on.

Ark in Space
Overall a great story, more ambitious than its budget allowed, packed with great sci-fi ideas, and of course one of the finest Tardis crews. If you only watch one Tom Baker story, this is a solid pick.
Not that anyone should watch only one Tom Baker, there’s a reason he got 7 seasons.

The thing about the Time Meddler is it’s nearly impossible to see it with the surprise as it would have been on broadcast. Elizabeth Sandifer (Tardis Eruditorum) argues the story should be called The Saxons or at least The Watcher (first episode title).
While it’s a trope now, before this point historicals didn’t have sci-fi elements in them. Finding another time traveller was a true shock!

I will admit that Time Meddler and Romans are my favorite first doctor stories.

“Rubbish. Why should I waste my time having useless injections against an imaginary epidemic?”
Even 70s Doctor Who had to deal with anti-vaxers.
The real enemy was idiotic bureaucrats the entire time.
The Silurians episode 3. The scene with the Doctor popping into Dr Quinn’s cabin is fantastic. On the one hand, this episode is kinda filler, but Pertwee makes him running around and talking to people a joy to watch.
Fulton Mackay is definitely the best guest star this story.
Unfortunately they don’t give Liz much to do this episode except check in on the security fellow in sickbay.

One of the things I like about the early Doctor Who years is the evolution of the show and character.
The story of the first Doctor is the story of how a time traveling coward became a time traveling hero. It’s not until his final story that he becomes the Doctor we are familiar with today.
The story of the second Doctor is the story of how the mythology around that time traveling hero evolves and transforms him into a Time Lord.
It occurs to me that the White Guardian would recruit the best and brightest person in the universe first, even if she was fresh out of school, and then recruit an assistant for her who had a TARDIS and a useful robot dog.
Of course, this assistant has a bit of an ego problem so that's not how he'd pitch it...
I ordered a book the other day. I knew I had volume 1, so I decided to continue my collection and pick up volume 2. Once it got here, while trying to find my copy of volume 1, I of course find a copy of volume 2 I already had. 😅
Volume 1 is still MIA.
Oh well, nothing wrong with supporting indie trans Doctor Who essayists.

Thanks to everyone who participated in my Doctor Who poll. It ended in a dead heat, which means I clearly must watch both the Silurians and the Dæmons. Both are excellent, so no regrets there.
( @Printdevil is always right.)

These days after watching any Classic Who story I go back and re-read the entry on the Tardis Eruditorum. She’s always got an interesting perspective and has lots of behind the scenes knowledge.
I should start collecting the print volumes.

Been rewatching Mawdryn Undead. I had forgotten that it was Turlough’s first story. Has there ever been another companion who started out as an assassin trying to kill the Doctor.
I like this episode, even though I don’t like the Black Guardian or Mawdryn, but I love that it’s actually a time travel story, particularly the (retired) Brigadier’s story.
