#SandDune Vote:
Some Tribal Perspectives on
Proposed Wind Port on #Wahsumkik

“..For both #Wabanaki people and non Wabanaki people...It has a great amount of history. It's ecologically sensitive and important to the #ecosystem of our coast...” - Darren Ranco,
PhD, #Penobscot Citizen, Professor at the University of Maine, MITSC Commissioner, #Maine #ClimateCouncil committee member.

April, 2024

"Sears Island (known also by the Penobscot name Wahsumkik) is the largest #undeveloped island within the state and one of the largest on the eastern seaboard, and considered important to #BirdMigration. Construction of a wind port operation would require the destruction of 70 acres of #forest and would impact a yet to be assessed area of marine eel grass. The destruction of a sand dune was
reportedly missed in a first assessment of the site, thus prompting the Governor's bill."

More disturbing news from climate scientists - the world’s coral reefs are dying rapidly and approaching the point of no return.
Our own beautiful reef is experiencing what they describe as an underwater bushfire with massive bleaching taking place.
The Albanese govt continues to waive through new fossil fuel projects and will not change environmental laws that allow their safe passage.
Thousands of QLD jobs rely on the GBR but when it dies - soon, where will all those people go when the tourism vanishes and the businesses fail that employ them

HELP FIX AUSTRALIA’S ENVIRONMENT LAW

If you think #Climate should be at the heart of Australia’s national environment law, add your name to the joint petition now.

The Climate Council, together with Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action, call on the Australian Government to pause all polluting fossil fuel project approvals until our national environment law is strong, and effectively addresses climate change.

This document from the
Climate Council has really good, concrete steps that people can take to help community groups, sports and arts organisation move away from fossil fuel sponsorship.
It can be awkward but we need to have these conversations.

climatecouncil.org.au/wp-conte

I'm in the habit of checking if orgs I work with have fossil fuel sponsors - there can be surprises. Orgs often list their "partners" online but
350 Australia also have an interactive list that you can check. Searching by state or sector can narrow it down to orgs most relevant to you.
cutallties.350.org.au/

If you find that an organisation you are involved in does have fossil fuel sponsors the Climate Council have some great suggestions on page 31 on how to address this.

And if an organisation doesn't accept fossil fuel sponsorship, you can encourage them to take a pledge and be counted on team right side of history.

New Climate Council report: Powderkeg: Australia primed to burn.
prevalence of grassfires. This may be particularly evident in 2023/24 summer, and may be amplified further if an ElNino eventuates.
Vegetation growth follows flooding events and grasslands dry out much faster.
Is Australia prepared? Not when we are authorising gas expansion.

El Nino and grassland fire risks in #Australia

Important new report from the #ClimateCouncil (authors include Greg Mullins and Joelle Gergis) on how the extended La Nina event over the last three years has enabled significant increases in grassland fire fuel loads which under drier El Nino conditions will then pose substantially higher risks of major grassland fires.

The challenge and opportunity for the Australian and State governments is to listen now to the scientists and firefighting leaders and to then plan how to reduce risk and also scale capacity to fight and contain these future fires before they can spread widely.

Read the report on:

A big loss to Australia.

I've just learned that Prof Will Steffen died at the weekend. He was a giant in climate science in Australia. He also a made a huge contribution in communicating climate science to the wider public.

@DrLiz indeed. The new #ClimateCouncil report paints a bleak picture of cascading climate driven extreme weather events : The Great Deluge, Australia’s new era of unnatural disasters

“Queensland suffers the most economic damage from such disasters. The Sunshine State’s total losses from extreme weather since the 1970s were around three times those of Victoria and 50% greater than New South Wales.” #climatecrisis climatecouncil.org.au/resource
