"Down by the River" is a song composed by #NeilYoung. It was first released on his 1969 album with #CrazyHorse, #EverybodyKnowsThisIsNowhere. Young explained the context of the story in the liner notes of his 1977 anthology album #Decade, stating that he wrote "Down by the River," "#CinnamonGirl" and "#CowgirlInTheSand" while delirious in bed in #TopangaCanyon with a 103 °F (39 °C) fever.

Neil Young with Crazy Horse, World Record, 2022 on Reprise

Great to have Neil Young put out a new album in 2022, his fifteenth with Crazy Horse (including Nils Lofgren, Ralph Molina, and Billy Talbot). Neil Young Archives Official Release Series (NYA ORS) 52. Recorded at Shangri-La in Malibu (Rick Rubin’s studio), and produced by Rubin and Young. Recorded and mastered all analog, as you might expect from Young.

The photos in the gatefold and inner sleeves list the Young family and their birthdates:

  • Father: 4.14.18
  • Mother: 1.14.17
  • Son: 11.12.45
  • Brother: 4.27.42
  • Sister: 8.16.62

My copy — via Waterloo Records in Austin TX — is a three-sided vinyl with a world map etched on the fourth side.

"Fu**in' Up" by #NeilYoung and #CrazyHorse.

A 2023 live recording of #RaggedGlory, (however missing "Mother Earth"). Some true Horse stomping here. RG possibly being one of their finest albums with all those noisy long jams. Some call it "grunge". In some 90s interview Neil told the biggest influence for the album was #Coltrane.

"At Crooked Lake" by #CrazyHorse.

A lesser-known Horse album from 1972, with only Molina and Talbot remaining from the original line-up. They are supported by The Curtis Brothers & Greg LeRoy, who are also responsible for most of the songwriting.

Overall pretty good country rock with great sound.

Today in Labor History January 8, 1877: Crazy Horse and his warriors fought their final battle against the U.S. Cavalry at Wolf Mountain, Montana Territory. Just six months earlier, Crazy Horse and Chief Gall had led Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors in the routing of Custer and the 7th Cavalry in the Battle of Little Bighorn. Many bands of Sioux and Cheyenne had returned to the reservations to get food and supplies in preparation for winter. However, Congress had demanded that they cede the Black Hills in exchange for these goods, and they replaced the civilian contractors in charge of these supplies with army soldiers. This convinced many people to avoid the reservations and mistrust the U.S. government even more than they already did. Then, in December, U.S. troops defeated Sitting Bull’s band, as well as Dull Knife's Cheyennes, who had trekked through snow to join Crazy Horse. Considering their weakened condition and the approaching winter, Crazy Horse tried to negotiate peace with the army. The army responded by murdering Crazy Horse's delegation. Consequently, they continued fighting. The final battle occurred on January 8, 1877. While only 3 people died on each side and the battle was essentially a draw, the U.S. treated it as a strategic victory in light of their recent humiliation at Little Big Horn, and because it showed they could avoid defeat under harsh winter conditions.

A photoprint of an illustration portraying Native American (Sioux and Cheyenne) and white men participating in the Battle of Wolf Mountain in Montana. A howitzer stands near a cliff edge in position to fire upon the Native Americans. From the original newspaper story: Our engraving, from a sketch by an officer of the expedition, represents the battle on the 8th of January, 1877, in the gorges of the Wolf Mountains, at the decisive moment when the Indians endeavored to flank the troops by occupying a high hill to the left and rear.
