David Bowie, The Lost Sessions, Vol 1, 2020 on Parachute Recording Company

Another Parachute Recording Company release, which collects radio broadcasts subject to different copyrights in the EU.

In this case, that includes appearances Bowie made on:

• Radio Caroline 1966
• Top Gear, December 18th, 1967
• DLT Show, October 20th, 1969
• The Sunday Show, Feb 5th, 1970
• Sounds of the Seventies, March 25th, 1970

As is not uncommon with bootlegs, some tracks are misidentified / mislabelled: C14 is not Janine but the 4:42 version of “The Width of a Circle,” and C15 is not “The Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud” by is actually “Janine.”

These same recordings appeared on an earlier CD bootleg titled The Lost Sessions (Rare Radio Recordings) on Leftfield Media, from whom the LP’s tracks are said be licensed.

I can’t bypass any Bowie bootlegs – audio quality here is mixed, so perhaps only for the truly devoted. My copy via Waterloo Records in Austin TX

Dessa, Bury the Lede, 2023 on Doomtree Records

Dessa is a part of the hip-hop collective Doomtree out of MInneapolis – great collection of artists and she is (for me) one of the standouts. She was also cohost of the Deeply Human podcast in 2021-2022.

My copy is a signed red-vinyl “Collector’s Edition” via Waterloo Records in Austin TX. Unfortunately my copy did not include the Custom Dopp Kit or the poster.

Neil Young with Crazy Horse, World Record, 2022 on Reprise

Great to have Neil Young put out a new album in 2022, his fifteenth with Crazy Horse (including Nils Lofgren, Ralph Molina, and Billy Talbot). Neil Young Archives Official Release Series (NYA ORS) 52. Recorded at Shangri-La in Malibu (Rick Rubin’s studio), and produced by Rubin and Young. Recorded and mastered all analog, as you might expect from Young.

The photos in the gatefold and inner sleeves list the Young family and their birthdates:

• Mother: 1.14.17
• Son: 11.12.45
• Brother: 4.27.42
• Sister: 8.16.62

My copy — via Waterloo Records in Austin TX — is a three-sided vinyl with a world map etched on the fourth side.

Seventh full length studio album from Old Crow Medicine Show, recorded in their own studio (Hartland) in East Nashville, TN. Molly Tuttle guests on banjo on “Bombs Away.”

My copy via Waterloo Records in Austin TX, is one with blue sky and yellow flowers – different versions exist with purple, blue, and red variations of sky and grass.

David Bowie, Unplugged & Slightly Phased: Acoustic Broadcasts 1996, 2021 on Parachute Recording Company

Basically a live bootleg, this collects Bowie’s appearances at the October 1996 Bridge School Benefit. Parachute Recording Company labels these things as radio transmissions based on the difference in copyright law regarding things broadcast in the UK (and maybe the EU?).

It was previously released as a bootleg under multiple names by different labels – this version was released in 2021, and says it is under license from Leftfield Media, which (as per Discogs) “Issues semi legal releases using a hole in the European copyright laws concerning recorded public broadcasts.”

My copy via Waterloo Records in Austin TX – it’s a nice clean 2xLP pressing (from GZ Media) and sounds pretty good for an unauthorized bootleg – you could believe this could have been broadcast.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Weathervanes, 2023 on Southeastern Records

Ninth studio full-length from Isbell and sixth with the 400 Unit – won the 2024 Grammy for Best Americana Album 2024, and “Cast Iron Skillet” won Best American Roots Song. Isbell produced, with assistance from Matt Pence. Recorded at Blackbird in Nashville.

The subtitle (on the hype sticker) is “Life And Death Songs Played For And By Grown Ass People” – good description for Isbell and the 400 Unit broadly. Solid modern Americana record.

Hard to imagine how you could go wrong with Lucinda Williams covering Dylan, and this collection delivers exactly as expected.

Volume three of the Lu’s Jukebox In Studio Concert Series (I’ve got the first three volumes of the seven). Side D is a etching of Williams, from the photo that was used for Runnin’ Down a Dream, her tribute to Tom Petty (see images).

Waterloo Records will relocate to 1105 North Lamar Boulevard, a former Louis Shanks Furniture store and later a Whole Foods regional office. The building is 50% bigger, has more parking and has a larger, state-of-the-art stage for in-store performances, according to a news release.

Reed here covers Merle Haggard. Not exactly what you might expect from the blue-eyed soul singer, who I understand to be from Boston (graduated Brookline High in 2002) – but it is a wonderful set of versions.

Liner notes by his dad, Howard Husock, pointing out that country music actually “grabbed ‘E’ first.”

Produced by Reed, recorded at Hive Mind in Brooklyn, with a band including Michael Montgomery, Noah Rubin, Colin Brown, Morgan Price, Michael Buckley, Nadav Nirenberg, and Billy Aukstik.

I’m a big fan of St. Paul and the Broken Bones since their debut album, Half the City, came out in 2014. On this record the 8-piece band is founders Paul Janeway and Jessie Phillips plus Al Gamble, Allen Bransetter, Amari Ansari, Browan Lollar, Chad Fisher, and Kevin Leon. This is their 4th studio full-length and first on ATO Records.

Recorded at Communicating Vessels in Birmingham Alabama and mixed at Sam Phillips by Matt Ross-Spang who also produced.

Love seeing this band continue to evolve.

Angel Olsen, Whole New Mess, 2020 on Jagjaguwar

Whole New Mess presents new takes on the tracks from Angel Olsen‘s 2019 All Mirrors: though actually the Whole New Mess versions were recorded earlier, in 2018 at The Unknown, a studio in a former church in Anacortes Washington. (It is labeled as “the primer and precursor to All Mirrors“).

It was produced by Michael Harris and mixed by John Congleton, but is just Olsen and her guitar where All Mirrors had a full band.

She performed earlier this year at the Cabot Theatre – great show which I neglected to post about here.
