A standup comic on stage says "So at this point, I was figuring I had two chances..." A heckler says "Slim and none!" The comic says "Look, friend. I know you're just doing something you've seen on a thousand TikToks and Instagram clips where the crowd interacts with the comic. I get it." The comic continues, "But a lot of comedy isn't about crowd work. It's about carefully-crafted narratives, the dance of setup and payoff, the meticulous raising and then reversing of expectations." Silhouetted artistically against two spotlights, the comic goes on, "And that whole delicate choreography comes crashing down if an audience member tries to make the show about themself." With a conciliatory smile, the comic concludes, "I guess it comes down to respecting the art. Does that sound reasonable?" The heckler replies, "It sure does. I'm sorry." The comic says "Thanks. Now where was I?" "A fart joke," says the heckler." "Right! Thanks!" says the comic. "So either I blame it on the dog..."
