#DWM

2026-03-12

#nhk is a modal, keyboard-driven desktop environment based on and extending the functionality of #dwm (dynamic window manager), developed by suckless. i'm ironing out some rough edges to allow careful management of screen space and increased workflow speed.

On my n-th try to get #nixos to work for me I came across #dwm, which I used regularly years (more like decades) ago. Back then I got annoyed the the constant recompiling to change configuration amd moved on to another tiling wm*. Now on NixOS this feels like a natural fit. Just throw a patch into your nix repo and apply it using the nix dwm configuration. It's all code anyway. I think I'm very close to something which works for me...

  • IIRC I went on to write a extensive fvwm2 configuration to make it behave like a tiling vm - because it was part of the OpenBSD base system.

Found an old private gist from 2020 when I was running
Slackware 14.2 with a minimalist desktop.

JWM + st + slock + sxiv + nnn
and vim in the console.

Funny to see how some tools stayed with me to this day.
Now it's mostly dwm + st + neatvi + noice + slock + slstatus

Kernel upgraded to Linux 6.19.6 on Slackware.
System stable so far... Rachael Tyrell from Blade Runner keeping an eye on things.

#slackware #kernel #dwm #st #slackfetch #nvi #neatvi

Simplified slstatus to what I actually use. Keybinds for applications back from sxhkd into config.def.h. Keys good again, VoidLinux updated. Thanks to the collective hangover after Tet I could do all this at work. Productive (finally) 😜

Dwm on VoidLinux, showing the compile window and a fetch in a terminal window. Opacity galore.

we are so vulkan v1.2

i am sending this from a laptop which came out 10 years ago (my previous one is from 15 years ago), the specifications are maybe twice as bad so i am using alpine linux and wayland to compensate, it has vulkan and the battery holds a charge though, so it is more of a trade-off than a downgrade

@kzimmermann look i did it, desktop alpine

as per tradition, neofetch of a new linux install. also vkgears to show that this device supports vulkan

I'm giving on a new try these days after a few months on Cinnamon and I'm generally impressed! 1. Almost as snappy and responsive as , low RAM usage, great for my old laptop. 2. Has a lot of functionality and customizability and looks great after some tweaking. But I have issues switching between light and dark modes, switching GTK theme leaves apps (web browser specifically) stuck in dark mode and it's quite stubborn. Any tips?

As a non-dev I really enjoy the strictness of code. And the strictness of reading error-messages. Miss a comma or a curly bracket and you're reminded of your shortcomings. The ah-yes-of-course moment. Come across that with my nixos-rebuild and the dwm make. Loving it. As long as I can solve it 🤣

Getting there! Updated and patched to dwm 6.8, on Void. And since spring is coming I decided to go for that good ol' murky foliage kind of stuff 😜

Also... If you need more than 5 virtual desktops on your #Linux / #UNIX #tiling #WM then I kindly ask you to STOP what the hell you're doing and take a DEEP breath to consider. #DWM #Sway #i3wm

Interesting paper on dynamic window managers vs floating ones.

https://arxiv.org/pdf/2511.17516

TLDR: tested on a Dell XPS 13 (single screen, Linux), dynamic WM was ~38% faster for common tasks.

My take: tiling really shines on a single monitor — the tag/workspace system lets you mentally map your work and forget about window hunting. With 2 monitors the advantage narrows since screen space.

VoidLinux to the rescue.
Obviously that LUKS, dracut and bin kernel was a glorious PITA on Gentoo.
But..... VoidLinux has everything I want, a tutorial that actually worked was found quickly and now dwm 6.8, st and dmenu all compiled gloriously. Let the patching begin. Remember, this time I wanted to start from zero, Unfortunately I have to work tomorrow 🤣 so this will have to wait to later in the week. But this feels very appropriate for the ThinkPad. Beer time 🍻 on a job well done 😆

Just published a dwm config.h quick reference practical guide for customising vanilla dwm without knowing C.

Feedback welcome.
