COLUMBIA, S.C. — Cop Killer on Death Row Asks the S.C. Supreme Court to Intervene: With his execution scheduled for April 11, attorneys for death row inmate Mikal Mahdi are asking the South Carolina Supreme Court to intervene, arguing that Mahdi never received a fair chance to present mitigating evidence about his abusive upbringing and serious mental health issues.

Mahdi, now 41, was convicted and sentenced to death in 2006 for the ambush-style murder of Orangeburg Public Safety Capt. James Myers, an off-duty officer gunned down in the middle of a violent spree that also included the killing of a North Carolina store clerk over a can of beer.

"Both groups were surprised that they had so much in common. The condemned women were astonished that the nuns had chosen to live a life nearly as confined as their own, in rooms that they, too, called 'cells.'"
