Since all of the photos in the last post were black & white, I figured I'd do a post of colorful photos from the same trip.  :)

All of these were taken at Deception Pass State Park, mostly in the Rosario Head area.  The lead photo is, I think, Broadleaf Stonecrop.  I've seen it before in other places growing, as its name implies, from cracks in stone, and its shock of bright color against grey rock always grabs my eye.

I've also included a color version of one of the photos from the prior post.  While I, personally, like it best in black & white, it works in color too I think.

Color photo. A plant growing out of a crack in a lichen covered rock. The plant has a long orange stem that fades to yellow-green at the end, where it splits out into a cluster of flowers with green and yellow petals. The stem is has a collection of small leaves growing from it that match the color of the part of the stem they grow from. The base, at the crack, is a collection of larger orange leaves, with smaller green ones beside them.

I took a trip up to Deception Pass State Park with my friend Lisa of Kyr Creates yesterday.  She set up in Bowman Bay to paint, and I hiked from there out to Rosario Head to do some photography.

We couldn't have asked for better weather; it was sunny and warm, without being hot, and the sky was filled with my beloved wispy clouds.  The hike was very pleasant, not being too long or too strenuous, and the views along the way were spectacular.  Highly recommended.

There's something about the combination of water, sky, and cloud that lends itself to black and white photography.  I hope you enjoy these!  A couple of them are strong contenders to be added to my print store; let me know which one (or ones!) you think I should add.

White waves are washing against the leftmost rock. In the middle distance, on the left, there is a rocky island. Above, the sky is full of wispy clouds.

Deception Pass isn't a mountain pass, it is a water passage formed by the Pacific Ocean between the Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands. Apparently George Vancouver misled himself into thinking Whidbey Island was a peninsula and the waters around it a passage inland. Nowadays Whidbey Island is the home of a US Navy air base, which means there are frequent loud jet noises overhead. There is a parking area on that middle part, where you can, if you choose, walk across the bridge on a narrow footpath while the cars whiz by. Not me, thanks!

Elephant seal today at #DeceptionPassStatePark (Washington state, USA).
She (?) hauled herself up on the beach and used her flippers to spray a mud bath on herself and then took a nap.

This might be "Elsie Mae", who had a pup there last year.
Large sections of the park were off limits to humans to let her raise her pup.

An elephant seal on a gravelly beach. She is about 6 feet long, and well blubbered.
She raises her rear flippers to stretch.
