🛰️ Dam-break modelling with GRASS GIS

I used the r.damflood module in GRASS GIS on a historical scenario:
the destruction of the DniproHES dam by Soviet forces in August 1941 during their retreat from Ukraine.

I reconstructed a pre-war DEM of the Dnipro River from old topographic maps, modeled the dam structure, and created a breach raster.

Using r.damflood, I simulated the propagation of the flood wave over the first 24 hours after the dam explosion.
Based on this model, I generated a visualization showing the wave dynamics.

All tools used are fully open-source.
The results have not yet been published anywhere.

🔎 Preliminary watershed delineation for the Inhulets River study

One of the early intermediate products from my broader research on the anthropogenic impacts on the #InhuletsRiver.
This map shows a preliminary delineation of local drainage basins across the study area, derived from high-resolution DEM processing and hydrological modelling.

The goal of this stage is to establish a consistent spatial framework for later analyses — including flow pathways, contaminant transport patterns, and the interaction between surface and groundwater systems.

Geospatial analysis and modeling is not only about:
1. downloading Copernicus data,
2. generating pretty maps,
3. calling it “analysis”.

In reality it often means years of collecting and reconciling heterogeneous data from different eras: digitizing historical maps, fixing coordinate systems, validating geometry through indirect evidence. This stage can easily take more time than all later modeling.

The images show how I digitized and georeferenced 1920s–1940s topographic maps of the lower Dnipro region. After transforming them into a unified coordinate system, I used them to reconstruct the pre-flood terrain (before the Kakhovka Reservoir).
That DEM later became the basis for modeling the 1941 DniproHES dam-break wave.

…This data-preparation phase alone took me almost four years.

🏔️ How high is your community?

Using the MRDEM-2024 elevation model, I mapped the average elevation for each Calgary community.
The result clearly shows how the city “steps down” from the western uplands toward the Bow and Elbow River valleys in the east and south.

🔹 The highest areas — around Tuscany, Rocky Ridge, and Cougar Ridge — rise over 1,240 m above sea level.
🔹 The lowest zones — Shepard, McKenzie Towne, and parts of the southeast — drop to about 1,000 m.

It’s a great reminder that Calgary’s landscape still reflects its glacial past — a city built on terraces, slopes, and ancient river plains.

@ferrix @heidilifeldman It's true that there are plenty of conservative Dems. But the real problem with the #JackassParty isn't the political positions they profess, it's the donor class they're beholden to, which is the same one the #Rethuglicans are beholden to. #Plutocrats who hate the public. This is true of all #Dem leaders except a few outliers like #Mamdani. The difference between (typical) D versus R leaders is just a matter of wolves in sheep's clothing versus wolves in wolves' clothing.

And anyone who cannot accept this will continually be shocked by what they perceive as betrayals. They aren't betrayals, they're entirely logical and sensible hostile moves by people who have never been anything but our enemies.

Turning the #JackassParty into a force for good will require a hostile takeover that must include ending the careers of nearly every recognizable name presently associated with it. And forgetting their names. #Mamdani has the right idea about that. But it’s not just the one name he said he'd never speak again. There are many, many more names that merit the same treatment.
