A small wooden footbridge, known locally as Devil’s Bridge, spans a shallow rocky stream at the entrance to Swallow Woods. The bridge has timber railings on both sides and a wooden gate at the near end, opening onto grassy ground. Behind, the dense woodland is filled with mature trees, their foliage forming a lush green backdrop. Ferns and bracken grow at the woodland edge.

Wooden footbridge with gate crossing a rocky stream into dense green woodland.
Ogden Brook winds South East through a grassy valley dotted with boulders and tufts of rushes. A few sheep graze along the stream banks, and a stone wall and gate mark the start of a track leading into the wooded area ahead. Beyond, rolling hills rise towards a skyline of mixed pasture and woodland under a partly cloudy summer sky.

This is the bridge at the bottom of the long and very steep climb at Devils Bridge, just outside Aberytwyth.

Despite it being a sunny Sunday morning, the light at the bottom of this cliff was not good. The colours are very flat in this picture, so I'm sticking with black and white.

A metal foot bridge, central in the picture, with some steps up, before a flat section at the top. Beyond the bridge are steps up a steep climb surrounded by foliage. A figure can just be made out climbing the steps.

A short car ride from Aberystwyth is the waterfall at Devils Bridge. I went there on Sunday morning. It is a very steep climb down and then up the other side to get to the bottom.

I've not done many long exposure shots, but I thought I would give it a go.

A long exposure of a waterfall. The long exposure is giving the water, a milky, dreamy look as it drops into a pool. The waterfall is set in cliff wall, with rocks, trees and foliage all around it.

Worms Head at Rhossili, Gower from a trip earlier this year. A fantastic if technically difficult walk that can be done at low tide. 🌊🌊🥾🥾

I love the farie effect of the #lomochromepurple film which gives the #devilsbridge a more magical feeling. Maybe i can visit the devils bridge again in winter when the swampy ground is more walkable due to the cold and take some shots from below.

It also has an interesting history: The bridge is arching over the "Teufelgraben" and is not that far away from the old firing ranges in Katharinenholz. The surrounding area was swampy and when it strongly rained the Bornstedter Lake was likely to overflow. The drain or "Teufelsgraben" was build in 1786 and helped to direct the overflowing water into the Golmer Luch.

The bridge over the drain was built for pure practical reasons though. The soldiers from the Potsdam garrison often marched from the Potsdam castle to the fields of Bornstedt. The bridge was meant as a shortcut and built in 1844 from Rüdersdorf limestone. At that time, Wilhelm IV wanted to have another park created between the Crown Estate and Lindstedt castle and commissioned Peter Joseph Lenné with the landscape planning. The king's favourite architect Ludwig Persius designed the bridge as a five-arched Roman viaduct. Six years before, another bridge was built for Wilhelm's brother in castle Glienicke - also called Devils bridge.

Although it was planned for practical reasons, the bridge suited the bigger plans of Wilhelm IV. He wanted a big landscape park in style of an english garden. It also seems that he didn't wanted to see military during his rides. What could be better than guiding soldiers through the forest, far away from the public eye. The plans for the near "Ruinenberg" also show that the military was again and again removed from the hill, so that the panorama was not ruined from military buildings (that was also the reason why the firing ranges in Katharinenholz got expanded. They were on the Ruinenberg before).

However, the park was never laid out as planned and Wilhelm IV. died in 1861 so he never saw the results. The Teufelsgraben also lost his meaning because the water from Lake Bornstedt flows into the Lindstedt drainage through a clay pipe underground since 1891.

The image depicts a picturesque scene featuring an old stone bridge spanning across a clear blue river. The bridge is set in a valley with steep, rocky walls that are lush with greenery and dotted with patches of grass and trees. The perspective of the photo appears to be taken from below the bridge, looking up towards the arch of the structure. The water beneath the bridge reflects its design beautifully on its surface. The style of the artwork is reminiscent of classic landscape photography, capturing the natural beauty of the location with a focus on the contrast between the man-made bridge and the wild nature surrounding it.

There is also a house or structure visible in the distance on the left side of the frame. The image has an antique look, possibly suggesting it was painted during the late 19th or early 20th century. The colors are vibrant and contrasting, highlighting the water's movement against the stillness of the surrounding greenery.
