Scientists have discovered a rare window in the Drake Passage, where carbon sinks quickly into the deep ocean. The Drake Passage is a turbulent region between Antarctica and South America, where cold and warm currents collide. The scientists used underwater robots to measure how undersea mountains and fast currents create eddies that transport carbon-rich phytoplankton to the depths.
