Just back from a trip to Czechia. One of the highlights was descending into the Budvar brewery cellars to taste beers directly from the tanks.

The Tmavý Ležák (dark lager) in particular was markedly different to the pasteurised version you'll see above ground. It had a much richer, deeper flavour.

There were also two strong, wet-hopped lagers that were especially delicious, but those aren't on general sale.

Aleš Dvořák, the Budvar Beer Sommelier, pours a glass of dark lager from a large tank of beer. It was Aleš who developed the recipe for this beer.

Aleš has a beard and waxed moustache, glasses and a flat cap. He is wearing a fleece because it's pretty cold down in the cellars, at about 2ºC. It was 34ºC outside that day, so the cellars were definitely the place to be!

So apparently there was no group, e.g. Drinkstodon, for people across the Fediverse to discuss drinks together.

But, also apparently, merely by saying its name it snaps into existence like Voldemort or Candyman or something...

@drinkstodon I invoke thee.

Hi, who dis?

I have migrated over to epicure.social to hang out with fellow food and drink types, so here's my #Introduction again.

I'm a #DrinksWriter from #London.

My book #GinATastingCourse will be published in September 2023.

I write about #Beer, #Cider, #Spirits and #Cocktails. (Sometimes with a #Travel or #Sustainability angle.)

I mainly post about #Booze but also sometimes #Coding — I like to automate my boring admin using #Python and #ObsidianMD.

I also post about #Writing and particularly #NonFiction, and what it's like living the #WritingLife.

Visited Soma last night with friends. Between us we got through pretty much the whole cocktail menu. Every single one was delicious.

Plus the bartender made me an off-menu gibson with white truffle gin that tasted like a pickled onion monster munch. Good times.

TL;DR: Soma, v.g., hard recommend.

Good day today. Three articles commissioned, one #beer book deal nearly ready for signing and a third of my new #EnglishWine #viticulture column for this month written. If this keeps up I might actually be able to earn a living as a #drinkswriter... 🤯
(Happily we have incredibly modest outgoings 🤣)

#ThrowBackThursday to a wonderful trip to Hepple Spirits in the Northumberland moors. We tramped through the wilderness in Walter's wake for an hour or so while he told us about the Douglas fir and bog myrtle he forages for his gin, and the juniper of course. Then we turned a corner around one such bush and found ourselves in a hilltop martini bar with Walter effortlessly engaging Host Mode to mix us all drinks. They were delicious.

Walter from Hepple Spirits stands behind a bar under the open sky against a background of juniper bushes, smiling and mixing martinis. He is using a juniper twig to stir the booze.

Starting to receive gin samples I didn't even know were coming.

Looking back I can't find any emails to either the distillery or a PR about them.

Most odd, but still kinda nice.

This is an ABSOLUTE BELTER. Seek some out: andulamangin.com

A savoury, umami gin from Ireland with a costal kiss and a spicy kick.

They make it with five different kinds of seaweed.

(This was a free sample for my book, BTW.)

It's the British Guild of Beer Writers annual awards dinner tonight, and I am up for an award for writing about beer and sustainability.

It's usually a fun evening, and I don't see why this year should be any different!

Best of luck to my fellow nominees for this and all the other awards handed out tonight.

A line drawing of a foaming tankard of beer, in front of which lies a (very stylised) quill pen. This is the logo of the British Guild of Beer Writers. In case you didn't know that already, it also has those words written next to it. That's helpful. It also has text that says: Finalist 2022. There's lovely.
