Most apps ask for your phone number, email, blood type, and firstborn.

Session doesn’t even want your name.

No phone number. No servers. No metadata.
Just end-to-end encrypted chats routed through an anonymous network.

Perfect for when privacy isn’t optional—it’s necessary.

Signal vs. Session: Which messenger actually protects your privacy in a world that’s always watching?

I broke down what really matters—metadata, anonymity, and whether your phone number is giving you away.

@signalapp Does #signalmessenger have safeguards in place for when (not if) the #TrumpRegime goes after #encryptedmessaging? I'm a bit concerned as #signalapp is based in the #usa and I have moved 99.9% of my communication to that platform. If there are safeguards in place I'd love to hear what they may entail.

I've used Facebook Messenger for years as my go-to messaging app, but recently, I managed to get most of my friends and family to switch to #Signal instead!

At first, I considered European alternatives like #Threema and #Olvid—both great options and well worth the price. But convincing people to move to a paid app was a challenge, so Signal, being free and privacy-focused, was the easiest sell.

What really helped was showing them the difference in data collection between Messenger and Signal. It’s shocking how much personal info Messenger harvests.

Now, Signal is where we chat, make video calls, and stay connected—without the invasive tracking. 🚀🔒

If you're on iOS, just head to the App Store and compare the "App Privacy" section for Messenger and Signal. That alone should convince anyone to make the switch!

Have you managed to convince your friends and family to switch to a privacy-friendly messaging app? How did it go for you?

So WhatsApp is owned by Meta, as we all know. Anyone familiar with #encryption and #encryptedMessaging: are there any known technical details of the algorithms used in WhatsApp that would be a "tell" if Meta changed the underlying software such that they could read the messages?

I know it's not open source, but I'm just trying to assess my risk about having WhatsApp installed and using it to talk to some people I know (who are not in the US but in the EU). It's known that Zuckerberg is neutral evil and is happy to use the law when it suits him and subvert it when not, so I'm not talking from a GDPR perspective.

🌐🔒 Exciting news for privacy! The US government has officially recommended using Signal and other encrypted messaging apps after recent telecom hacks. This is a huge step forward in recognizing the importance of secure communication!

As someone who has always championed free and open-source software, I’m thrilled to see this acknowledgment from the government, especially given the increasing threats to our privacy. With the rise of surveillance and the potential for breaches in our communication networks, it’s more important than ever to prioritize encrypted messaging.

If even the CIA is warning us about the dangers of unencrypted communications, we should take it seriously! Let’s embrace tools that protect our privacy and autonomy. Remember, our digital safety is in our hands!

Have you made the switch to Signal or another secure messaging app, or know someone making it now?

Weekly output: Android 16, Mark Vena podcast, CISA communications-security advice

I hope this finds you well and with family this holiday season, by which I mean I hope that family tech support has not been too strenuous whether you’re the provider or the recipient of it.

Patreon readers got an extra post this week: a look at the massive dent that data centers will put into Virginia’s electric grid in coming decades if current trends continue.

12/18/2024: Latest Android 16 Preview Tips Improved App Response, Location Security, PCMag

This short post covered the second developer preview of Android 16, moving forward on an earlier development cycle than previous releases of Google’s mobile operating system.

12/18/2024: Ep 105 SmartTechCheck Podcast — Expected CES Trends, Intel CEO departure, new incoming FCC leader, Mark Vena

My major contribution to this episode of my tech-analyst pal’s podcast was trying to unpack the agenda of incoming Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr.

12/19/2024: The Feds Have Some Advice for ‘Highly Targeted’ Individuals: Don’t Use a VPN, PCMag

I’ve been impressed for the past few years by how the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency offers specific and actionable advice even if it may upset some vendors. CISA stuck to that pattern with the guidance it issued to people high enough in government or politics to draw the attention of Chinese state-sponsored hackers who have burrowed deeply into U.S. telecom infrastructure–guidance that included the seemingly counter-intuitive advice not to use a VPN for privacy protection because that only transfers the privacy risk from your current sources of connectivity to a single company. I think CISA’s right about that, certainly in the context of most PCMag readers. And in my own case: My major use case for VPNs these days is to evade geoblocking restrictions, like when I’m trying to read GDPR-incompliant U.S. news sites from somewhere in the EU.

So Google's lying about their messaging app being encrypted. How relevant is this though? Does anyone still use Google Messages?

In the wake of a massive cyberattack against US telecoms operators, the FBI has urged Americans to use encrypted messaging apps to keep their mobile communications secure. But why does that matter?

techradar.com/computing/cyber-

“If you are in a business setting and need to communicate securely, then by all means do not text and certainly do not email. Use a trusted encrypted communication platform authorized by your firm.“

Weigh your risks up. Not all communications pose the same level of risk.
