Johannes Karkia syntyi korona-aikana modulaarisyntetisaattorikaninkoloon sukeltamisen seurauksena. Eurorack- ja muilla syntetisaattoreilla tehtyä elektro-tekno-ambient-industrialia tms. Toinen puolisko Karkia Walo -runomusiikkiduosta @aikako kanssa. Mastodoniin tilin tekeminen lienee yritys lähteä vapauttamaan tätäkin projektia paskoontuneiden kaupallisten alustojen ikeen alta.

Johannes Karkia was born during the lockdowns as a result of diving down the modular synth rabbit hole. Elecro/techno/ambient/industrial made on eurorack modular synthesizers. Also half of the Karkia Walo poetry music duo with @aikako. Coming here is an attempt to start freeing this project from under the yoke of enshittified commercial platforms.

Hopefully repairing this Doepfer PLL module with a new OpAmp, since that's most likely the thing broken, but we'll see. The two logic chips are bigger and I don't have any of them, but I do have some spare NE5532P opamps.

Weekend build a success, this 1U tile three channel passive mixer. And it's working great!! Built specifically for the sidecar synth shown here to kick it up a dimension. Made only from spare parts I had lying around on a Saturday (which explains the weird knob layout and also that they are wired backwards so that I could use the traces efficiently on the project board).

The Maneco Minilooper (EHX 16 Seconds clone) and the Winterbloom Sol fit in the 4ms Modbap without damaging the backs by using these little brass risers. I had enough from an old RPi cluster build and the threading matched, so a formerly very limited case has gained some functionality!

This is a perfect format for the Minilooper because it really does act and operate like a guitar pedal.

It's a dual VCO based on spectral synthesis. It builds waveforms from a bunch of sine waves. It is pretty unique in how it generates a core spectrum from various parameterized integer series and all the different ways the core spectrum can be modulated by CV input. It has two identical oscillators that share CV modulation inputs but have their own volt-per-octave inputs. Lots of info on my website

Newly rearranged modules for a sequencer + synth voice thing. Nothing new here, just cleared out space in this rack case for another row and built it with modules I own.

And in case you're wondering, yes I did this for the track I'm working on. :)

This is why I love modular fundamentals and synthdiy - need an instrument? Build one! You cannot do that with a lot of the boutique stuff these days... your "sound" is someone else's.

Two full rows of modular synth, unpatched so it is a menagerie of switches and knobs and jacks. The panels on the top row are mostly silver, the panels on the bottom mostly black. On a shelf extending from the bottom are four effects pedals/devices, also unplugged. At the very front is a microphone lying on its velvet red bag.

Picked up the Maneco Labs Minilooper used, this is a reproduction of the ElectroHarmonix 16s delay from the 80's!

It behaves like a pedal with bypass and continuous recording, had a lot of fun playing with drones last night.

Love it when I find weird shit for sale. The panel design is definitely weird - which I love. And it behaves just like I like.

@norootcause This may seem niche, but The Modular Synthesizer.

Invented in the 1950s and then ushered into reality by Moog and Buchla in the '60s, then soon by Roland. Used by all your favorite jam bands of the '70s, but very expensive and not reaching nearly the popularity of its contemporary blossoming technology, The Electric Guitar.

All sorts of brands came out with modulars, but it wasn't until the '90s that Dieter Doepfer's "Eurorack" - a "miniature" format for modular - began to infiltrate the scene.

Fast forward to 2025, and Eurorack has become the most popular format, it dominates electronic music with all the brands and DIY being done. There is no serious electronic musician without a modular, and it is probably one of many.
