I've stopped working with obsolete xDSL network devices. I have an ISP Fiber who installed Fiber to the CURB and Fiber to the Home simultaneously just to make money. They installed the obsolete fiber to the curb systems to milk people into making them think that xDSL is a way for the future.

Meanwhile on quite stable 4G Networks they give the speeds that you see in the screenshot. I can reach more than 40 MBit per second! I would rather be ad hoc on the internet, then have a slow obsolete 10 MBit connection over two copper wires.

This might be useful for other UK people on an FTTC broadband package who make zero use of the bundled landline telephone service.

My ISP (Aquiss) recently announced a forthcoming £3 pcm price bump due to the retail cost of the service from OpenReach.

In the same email they also pointed out that SoGEA is a thing, where you can have an FTTC broadband service without the associated landline service. Thus, you can save money by not paying for something you don't use.

As I've not had a phone plugged into the landline for a couple of years now, and never received any useful call on it for years before that, I leapt at the chance to reduce my bill.

In my case rather than going up by £3 pcm my bill will now go down by £8 pcm, so a saving of £11 pcm compared to what I would have paid after the price increase.

So, even if your ISP hasn't said anything about this it might be worth asking them about migrating to SoGEA instead of the usual FTTC with bundled landline.

Additionally, for anyone else on Aquiss, be aware that switching might involve changing IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. I'm still on addresses they lease from CityFibre, who are getting out of that business, so am being migrated to Aquiss's own pools as part of this change.

Lift and Shift on the DSLAM last week fixed my Broadband, it had been perfectly stable for a whole week. So last night I put the took the test modem out and it failed again.

My replacement NBN box lasted almost three weeks! No really close lightning, no blackouts. I was using it, decided to unplug. Too late, by the time I got there it was faulting. No internet. Sigh? Back to [shudder] 4G. 😭

Sure, the box isn't flashing red this time, but it may as well be.

Does FTTP have this problem? 🤔

OK, VDSL question.

If you unplug the copper pair from the modem/router should the DSL light go out?

My link has been going down at ~00:15 (or ~02:15) every night for the last 3 weeks. It only comes back up if the modem is power cycled (PPPoE session handled by different kit). But as part of testing before resetting, I unplugged the copper pair and the DSL light doesn't go out (even after 5mins).

After the reset, if I pull the copper pair then DSL light does go out.

OK, this broadband fault is getting really annoying.

Overnight (It's always after midnight) my line will go down, it will then not come up until the Modem (VDSL in bridge mode) is power cycled.

It feels like it has to be a problem in the modem, as even unplugging the copper pair doesn't reset it (if it was the DSLAM end I'd expect that to clear it?).

I've swapped out the Modem (for an identical unit), and it still happens, which feels like it has to be a software fault.

About 26hrs ago (exactly at 02:01) the following services of my ISP died all together in sync

VOIP (phone voice) XDSL GSM LTE+. I noticed the warning my router gave & the gateway going red and dead. No calls were possible, since the GSM networks also died for me.

How? FTTC we have FTTC small expensive boxes (1.30m 40cm 1.20m) besides the streets. Mine dropped itself hard along with wireless servers in my area. Why? Neglected maintanance. Result catastropic drop of ALL services for 2+hours!

I went into comms survival mode (with my tranceivers) Those were fine of course. Why is there no second route to the servers when my main FTTC box fails? Greed & logistics.

The ISP never told me what happened. A friend inside gave me some data. As a monopolist th ISP has too much technical power over us. There's a FTTH project running, which will at least drop the FTTC network boxes besides the roads. However that project should have been FTTH only. Instead they made a terrible mix of FTTH & FTTC. The mix was made with corruption in the background because the FTTC network is cheaper. Also when they put you on the FTTH network they still deliver absimal XDSL speeds.

The provider has also made a mistake of putting the network FTTH above ground. So every time someone slams the telephone poles down that Network also goes down with all your communications. That means you will have no VoIP no Data, which means a total cut off from what could be a lifeline, when it comes down to the VoIP service, for which the phone providers on my continent still have to give 48 volts of DC power to the phone lines for a whole week after power utility has been cut off. They are forced to do so by Law of the Land.

Fast forward… nicht mal ein Jahr später. Telekom sagt plötzlich “ist wirtschaftlich nicht abbildbar, #Fachkräftemangel und gestiegene Baukosten”. Vielleicht ab 2028 fangen wir nochmal an zu überlegen. Klar, weil dann die Baukosten halb so hoch sind. Das ist einfach ein #Verdrängungskampf gewesen, die Telekom hat den Markteintritt der Konkurrenz vereitelt und verdient nochmal mindestens 4 Jahre an ihrem #Kupfernetz weiter.

Immerhin kann man sich jetzt nochmal einen 24 Monate Vertrag DSL mit Rabatten bei der Konkurrenz sichern. 🤬

Sorry again for being so quiet on fedi recently! Just been so busy!

Some good news to share though: today we got confirmation from our ISP that we've finally been connected up to the OpenReach full fibre network 🥰

This means we'll now be able to move from our current FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) connection to a FTTP (fibre to the premises) one.

Our current connection maxes out at 80 Mbit/s down and 20 Mbit/s up.

We're currently looking at upgrading to the up to 900 Mbit/s down and 100 Mbit/s up service 😁

Faster internet go brrr.

Despite the obvious superiority of #fiber, #America has been very slow to adopt it. Our monopolistic carriers act as though pulling fiber to our homes is an impossible challenge. All those wires that currently go to your house, from power-lines to copper phone-lines, are relics of a #mysterious, fallen civilization and its long-lost arts.
