> In every discipline there are some concepts or skills that seem to be particularly difficult to teach. Meyer and Land (2006) called them “threshold concepts” because they have to be gotten over to proceed.

Last week, I had a blast with the #Faculty at Bryant University in a 2-day marathon of faculty consultations. Check out some of the highlights of advice I provided: aiedusimplified.substack.com/p

A picture in an indie comic book panel-style. It depicts a college classroom arranged for a faculty discussion. The diverse faculty are seated in a circle, each with thought balloons containing a variety of emojis to reflect their sentiments. The classroom includes typical elements like a whiteboard, windows, and bookshelves in the background. Overlaying the image is the title of the post: Doing Faculty Consultations.

I got to geek out about all things organization during a webinar where I shared over 20 tips for workshop preparation, facilitation, resource management, & more. Fun times!

#HigherEd #FacDev #EdDev

Title slide for workshop, which reads: "Behind the Curtain: Tips to Make Virtual Facilitation of Faculty Development Workshops Easier." This workshop was part of the free FL-IDN Professional Development Webinar Series.A slide entitled, "Time Blocking." Below is an image of a calendar with color-coded blocks of time. The slide also lists different examples of things facilitators can block off on their calendars, including the workshop sessions, design time, rehearsal time, "day of" prep time, and follow up time. Time blocking can be done in any calendar app, such as Google Calendar or Outlook.A slide about an AI tool called Magic ToDo (from Goblin Tools). This tool automatically breaks up tasks for you. In the example on the slide, I entered the prompt, "Create a checklist of important tasks to do an hour before facilitating a virtual workshop via Zoom," and Magic ToDo created a list of tasks like:
-Ensure all necessary materials are ready (Check internet connectivity, charge devices, test audio and video equipment, review agenda and any talking points)A slide entitled, "Follow Up Emails." The slide include a screenshot of a sample email, with labeled arrows pointing to the different components (workshop recording, retrieval practice with timestamped links, resources, pedagogical consultations, upcoming workshops, & "Share Your Story" survey. The email reads:

Hello,

Thank you for registering for yesterday’s workshop, “Building Connections & Fostering a Positive Classroom Climate from Day One.” You can view a recording of one of the sessions here.

Retrieval Practice
Try to recall the following information from memory:
According to self-determination theory, what are the three basic psychological needs? (Check your answer here.)
What are some important points to keep in mind regarding students’ names? (Check your answer here.)

Resources
You can find all of the resources from the workshop on this Wakelet page.

Pedagogical Consultations
I am available for 1:1 and small group pedagogical consultations...

The book writing process is a trip! One day, you feel like a jar of murky water that has been shaken, with no clear vision of where to go next. Then the next day, the particles start to settle, and things become clear.

Shake. Settle. Repeat.
