While I'll admit this is somewhat self serving, I do believe that web apps rather than "native" apps remain the best path forward for most things, also on mobile.

The web remains the only platform that is not (entirely) controlled by #BigTech. There's no approval process. Web apps cannot (easily) be pulled. Whoever builds them is in full control of their distribution. There's no tax on "in app" purchases. Yes, the browser landscape is not as diverse as it ought to be and hopefully that will improve, but if you compare it to Apple and Google-controlled ecosystems like iOS and Android, it's still miles ahead. Also, they're way cheaper to build.

In 2026 I'm aiming to be more deliberate in filling up my dock and home screen (yes, I will likely stay on Apple operating systems for pragmatic reasons) with more and more web apps, replacing native apps. I think this doable now. OS support for PWAs has improved a lot (even on iOS). They can be icons on your home screen/dock, they can be fast, they can be offline capable, they can send notifications.

On my home screen right now some daily driver #PWAs: @silverbulletmd (notes), @phanpy (fediverse), #Miniflux (RSS reading), Voyager (Lenny and PieSocial client), @linkwarden (link collection), @homeassistant (still the native app, but 99% web tech), #Ghost (blogging), @plausible (analytics). #Feishin (@navidrome_releases streaming), @fastmail (email).

@zef not selfhosting but doing so is possible with this setup.

I edit all metadata in #MusicBrainz #Picard, upload those to a #cloudstorage of choice (for me @transIP #Stack) with structured folders (genre -> artist -> album), then connect to @astiga and listen using #Subsonic compatible #FOSS software (#Feishin and #Tempo in my case).

The selfhosted version would be to replace the cloud storage & Astiga with hosting an #OpenSubsonic, #Jellyfin, or @ampache server yourself.

New Feishin update looking great!

@lostinspc I ask because I find Navidrome does not pick up the files I created via its examples, and it did pick up one I made in #Feishin but even that does not seem to be dynamic in a #Navidrome browser session.

🙈 :awesome:

Dafür ziemlich feine Sachen getestet und gemacht:

Been trying out desktop clients for playing music (from #navidrome). I've narrowed it down to three that I like: #feishin, #ampcast and #supersonic. Do I need to just use one player? Can I use whichever on a whim?

@violexene OMG that's awesome. I actually did decide not to go with #navidrome because I already have a self hosted #jellyfin instance so it was much simpler to just add my music library to that. I'm using the #symfonium free trial at the moment and it's pretty good. I'll probably purchase it. But this app looks amazing!

Any hope for a Linux flatpak or appimage?

On my Fedora Workstation I'm currently using #feishin

@hank On web/Windows, I'm a huge fan of the built-in #Navidrome web player and #feishin (github.com/jeffvli/feishin and feishin.vercel.app/).

Besides my very ancient iPod which isn't compatible with most new apps, I don't really use Apple products, so I don't have any recommendations for those. That said, there's a pretty good list of apps in the Navidrome docs: navidrome.org/docs/overview/#a

Any of these apps can be tested with the Navidrome demo server: navidrome.org/demo/

Just went back to for an afternoon and I still can't fathom how bad the library organization of your music, especially your albums is. Biggest music player and a UI that was better and got way worse in the last years. Back to / , .

The hunt for #Jellyfin audio clients is in full swing. Currently settled on #Feishin but we'll see where I land ultimately.

Also looking for CarPlay apps. #Manet looks interesting, but I need to figure out how I'm going to expose Jellyfin to a remote node before going too far down that rabbit hole.

Hello fedi, I come in search of software recommendations again... This time I'm after a media server for my music library. What do you all tend to use? I already have Jellyfin for video - is it the state of the art for audio too, or do you prefer something else?

Anyone using Navidrome / Subsonic and clients:

How do I generate a playlist based of my last.fm recommendations or my library?

I don't want scrobbling. I already handled that.

I want to generate a playlist, where the track list is sourced from last.fm, and songs are sourced locally.

Is there any way to achieve this?

In other terms, I want to utilize last.fm radio from my local songs.

Update:

At this point in time, my #selfhosted #Navidrome server has 64 albums, out of which 47 are VGM (of which I listen to 15 regularly) belonging to 30 different games, 8 are furry music (Fox Amoore and Klace), and 4 are all the main albums from #Homestuck. It amounts to 27 GB, most of it FLAC of course.

I use #Tempo as Android client and #Feishin as desktop client. Feishin already had support for synced lyrics, Tempo recently got support for it and it finally got published to F-Droid too.

My collection is the type that simply isn't really available in a centralized manner in any platform, I really like that. When I get the time I want to add LRC lyrics to all songs that I like to sing, then make all the lyrics files available publicly so people aren't walled behind services like Genius or whatever to listen to furry music with lyrics.

Can't wait for #Feishin to finally support #Subsonic, #Sonixd is really getting old (and unsupported) :neocat_flop__w_:
