From the wayback machine. 2018 field campaign in the Kenyan East African rift. Images taken inside and above the Mt Suswa volcanic caldera.
Time for a #FridayFieldPhoto because it's #FieldWorkFriday
(Or perhaps a #FieldPhotoFriday entry)
More #DogSled on #SeaIce in Northern #Greenland from the spring this year..
Today I'm posting a tiny video as I've been working with some students on the data we collected this year.
How about a smashed pot found documented in situ in a Middle Bronze Age deposit?

(Too many pictures of dirt to choose from. An occupational hazard in #Archaeology)
Can we get #FieldPhotoFriday going over here? (Or #FridayFieldPhoto if you must).
Surveying stream beds (and trash) earlier this week. I can’t wait to see how the surveys compare to the ones we did last summer, because my eyes tell me there were some changes at most of our sites. #FieldWorkFriday #FieldPhotoFriday #urbanStream #TrashyStreams
Very very happy to see this shopping cart and gravel bar in the stream today. Last summer the cart was there, but the gravel bar was not. Did our trail camera capture the bar being built? We’ll find out when we analyze the photos we downloaded today! #FieldPhotoFriday #FieldWorkFriday #FieldWork #Geomorphology #GravelBar #trashyStreams #ChannelChange #UrbanStreams #Cleveland
I'm in the office today, but yesterday marked my first exploration of #BurlingtonVT's #urban #streams. I got to explore two very different small small streams, both affected by #stormwater #runoff, but only one with clear evidence of active #beavers. Looking forward to doing #research here! #FieldworkFriday #FieldPhotoFriday
..and sometimes stuff stops working. This is a cloud radar, which dropped off the network. On investigation the electronics housing below the antenna was repeatedly beeping in the manner of a PC failing to boot. Turned out to be a push-fit memory board shaken loose from its slot by the vibration of ice-breaking. An easy fix, but it took hours to find the problem. #FieldPhotoFriday
Sometimes the wildlife comes to check things out...

...We installed a mast on the ice to measure turbulent fluxes of heat, moisture, and wind drag on the surface. Also solar and infra red radiative fluxes...keeping the radiometers free of frost is a never-ending job. #FieldPhotoFriday
Apparently it's Friday, and it's just 10 days until I head off to the Arctic for the #ArtOfMelt2023 field campaign, so here's some #FieldPhotoFriday fun from last time on the good ship Oden. 2018, close to the north pole, the Oden (home away from home) was moored to an ice floe and drifted for a month, while we made measurements of...well, everything we could.

One of those moments #InTheField when everyone is working at full tilt, making sure the observations are completed at a site before moving on to the next one.
Ad here is a new quick post: he countdown has begun and I'm in a #Fieldwork frame of mind.

A typical North Mengen "cooking house" (vail ta) in Pomio, #PapuaNewGuinea. Each household has one and it is where the married couple and uninitiated children live. The women in the photo are heating stones of an earth oven (svoin) and preparing taro to be roasted in it.
Food cooked in the earth oven is presented especially during ceremonial gift exchanges.

#FridayFieldworkPhoto part 6: A woman preparing her yam garden for planting.
The Mengen in Pomio plant two kinds of yam, the greater yam (Dioscorea alata, Mengen: klaip, Tok Pisin: yam) and the lesser yam (Dioscorea esculenta, M: mis, TP: mami ).
After burning, women meticulously clean the plots from all debris before planting the yam in mounds.
