From traffic channels to
"replacing them with shared surfaces, lower speeds, an ecological layer, and spatial ambiguity."

Shared public spaces
"are expected to accommodate not only movement and encounter but also water infiltration, carbon sequestration, shade, biodiversity, and multispecies migration, while remaining safe and efficient conduits for people and infrastructure above and below ground."

"Personal transportation is a primary driver of urban sprawl and the proliferation of intercity highways."

Is (Adelaide's) stormwater contributing to the toxic algal bloom?

"... Stormwater "had never been sexy" and, as long as it was flushed away, it did not get the attention nor the government investment it deserved."

"The EPA's Adelaide Coastal Waters Study (ACWS) summary of 2008 stated that nutrient loads had increased 30 to 50 times since European settlement, and recommended steps to reduce wastewater, stormwater and industrial inputs. The study found the loss of seagrass was "mainly due to stormwater flows" "

Algal bloom exposes 'limitations' in government monitoring programs, Senate inquiry

"What this inquiry has laid bare is just how ill-prepared the state and federal government were for a climate-induced disaster like we are having unfolding on our coastline here in SA."

Beach pollution

"If you imagine in a catchment [where] there's lots of roads, people have pets, people have gardens, lots of vehicles and human activity, these things will add to the increased risk of poor water quality when there's increased rainfall."

The “chemization” of aquatic habitats

“Mapping chemical footprints of organic micropollutants in European streams. There is increasing awareness that chemical pollution of freshwater systems with complex mixtures of chemicals from domestic sources, agriculture and industry may cause a substantial chemical footprint on water organisms, pushing aquatic ecosystems outside the safe operating space.” >>

Pesticide spray drift from intensive horticulture on the the mid-north coast NSW -
Discontent in the region.

Home owners, dairy and beef producers among those concerned about how pesticide use affects their land as well as water quality on the mid-north coast

“Between 2001 and 2016 blueberry farming expanded 400% – mainly around the Coffs Harbour region.”

“This monitoring showed the continued detection of pesticides in most waterways sampled, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring in the region.”

“Monitoring in the Nambucca valley by the EPA has detected three different pesticides in low levels in three creeks, suggesting water quality in the area is not being impacted by excessive amounts of pesticides.”

Brewing oceans, brewing storms, making a blooming disaster

"Over the past year, Australia’s oceans have been hotter than ever before...The continued burning of fossil fuels has caused our atmosphere to warm by approximately 1.2 degrees C since the pre-industrial era....If you change what happens in the oceans, you start to change the whole system...The problem with climate change is we’re hitting that system incredibly hard with extra energy and we’re putting a lot of pressure on the oceans."

Stormwater drains, floods and marine turtles with soft-shell syndrome

"Cases of a fatal turtle disease characterised by necrotic lesions are trending downward on Queensland's Fraser Coast, but researchers still hold concern for the population's future."

"Marine turtles with soft-shell syndrome (SSS) started washing up on Hervey Bay shores, 300 kilometres north of Brisbane, in 2022.They were getting lesions on their flippers and their gastrointestinal tract was horrendous, full of infection."

"One way is to try and stop the sediment actually getting into the bay areas, and that includes things like stormwater drain catches, doing lots more revegetation along rivers and streams and things like that."

"...The group was called out to 600 turtle strandings in 2022 and 500 in 2023."

The SA Marine Mortality Events 2025 project.

"Dead and dying sea creatures wash up among sea foam caused by a huge algal bloom at a beach in South Australia. Sixty-one leafy seadragons, 604 Port Jackson sharks, 1,999 southern fiddler rays and 287 bluespotted goatfish make up a fraction of the dead washed up on South Australian beaches in the past months."

"The seagrass meadows...have been ravaged by runoff, pollution and physical damage...Experts say data reported by beachgoers is ‘hugely useful’ after a slow official response to disaster."
