Folded Ketchepedrakee Amphibolite in east central Alabama. Nearby, magnetite quartzite is found that is thought to be the metamorphosed material deposited by deep sea hydrothermal vents. We call this kind of distinctive highly weathered amphibolite 'brickbat'.

I am experimenting with @photoprism to organise my roughly 55000 photos on various digital platforms.

So far it's going impressively well.
But I was amused to see this one categorised as "office".

It's not actually wrong. But perhaps not what most people consider an office...

Here is a near perfect example of how sometimes rotting logs can be mistaken at a distance for an outcrop. On the left is a quartz rich graphite + garnet schist. On the right is a tree stump that is submerged under a lake for 2/3rds of the year.

A few plant fossils I found yesterday in a roadcut through the Pennsylvanian Pottsville Formation.

Time for a #FridayFieldPhoto because it's #FieldWorkFriday

(Or perhaps a #FieldPhotoFriday entry)

More #DogSled on #SeaIce in Northern #Greenland from the spring this year..

Today I'm posting a tiny video as I've been working with some students on the data we collected this year.

How about a smashed pot found documented in situ in a Middle Bronze Age deposit?

Stumbled across this rat snake behaving weirdly. It didn't move an inch when I walked by it only a meter away. Its mouth was agape and eyes cloudy. I almost think it was dead.

A 4 to 5 foot long rat snake, on a rotting cedar log, in the woods.A close up of the rat snakes front end. it's mouth is slightly agape, the one visible eye is clouded, and it's body is slightly tensed.

Finally back in the field today, scouting out a new mapping area and looking for some graphite schist.

It's Friday and time for a #FridayFieldPhoto or perhaps it's #FieldworkPhotoFriday or even #FieldPhotoFriday..
We need to sort those hashtags out...
Anyway, this is a photo of myself and a colleague measuring snow depths on sea ice in northern Greenland last month.
-28C but perfectly still and sunny.
The snow was about 10-20 cm deep so an absurdly long measurement stick but easy to deploy quickly on a coffee break.
A person dressed in thick black clothes stands on white snow holding a 2.5m long thin stick stuck in the snow. Clear blue sky overhead

A typical North Mengen "cooking house" (vail ta) in Pomio, #PapuaNewGuinea. Each household has one and it is where the married couple and uninitiated children live. The women in the photo are heating stones of an earth oven (svoin) and preparing taro to be roasted in it.

Food cooked in the earth oven is presented especially during ceremonial gift exchanges.

#anthropology cc: @anthropology (or #FridayFieldPhoto, #FridayFieldworkPhoto series started by @Ruth_Mottram )

A black and white photo of thatched roof house from the inside. The door and window of the house are open. A woman stands inside in front of the door, another kneels peeling taro tubers. There is smoke inside the house. A pile of stones is in the middle of the house and flames come from between the stones. The house has an earth floor.

The walls are lined with benches and shelves holding cooking ware.

Good morning! Here's a lovely offshore #FridayFieldPhoto from a spot a hundred or so miles off the coast of Florianópolis, Brazil, in the south Atlantic Ocean.

#FieldPhotoFriday #OceanScience #nature #sunset #ocean #boat #ship #moon

The sun sets over the ocean in the Santos Basin, Brazil. This photo was taken a hundred or so miles off the coast of Florianópolis, Brazil. The sun has set below the horizon, which is dappled with small, dark clouds. Behind the clouds is a layer of colors, ranging from a deep orange nearest the horizon, to a brilliant yellow above that, to a gradient of lighter to darker blues above that. In the sky, just off-center slightly to the right, a small white crescent moon is visible. In the foreground, the bow of our research vessel, MV Sea Route, can be seen. The bow creates a dark V-shape in the foreground, offsetting the calm ocean. The ocean reflects the colors of the sky above.
