Pebble is officially Pebble again

In 2016, Pebble was acquired by Fitbit for $23 million, marking the end of the first Pebble era. Along the way, Fitbit was acquired by Google. That’s important because the tech giant agreed to open-source Pebble’s software, and Migicovsky announced earlier this year that Pebble was making a comeback. However, because Migicovsky didn’t have the trademark, the new Pebble watches were initially dubbed the Core 2 Duo and the Core Time 2. “Great news — we’ve been able to recover the trademark for Pebble! Honestly, I wasn’t expecting this to work out so easily,” Core Devices CEO Eric Migicovsky writes in an update blog. “Core 2 Duo is now Pebble 2 Duo. Core Time 2 is now Pebble Time 2.”

I published a book, more than a decade ago, on the #Akai #EWI 5000 #windcontroller/#synthesiser, aimed at wind instrument #musicians who wish to expand their tonal palette. I suppose it was well received—both people who read it told me so.

Not long after the publication, a UK-based professional saxophonist, who is totally blind, contacted me. He thanked me for the book, but he explained that the fingering diagrams I presented in the book were inaccessible to him. Obviously! That revelation struck me like a thunder. I wrote this article for him, as an addendum to my book.

Since the early 1980s, I had worked with CG and GUI, both in academic research and in industrial application domains. Yet, I did not pay enough attention to the plight of those who are perceptually impaired. In due course, I took conscious steps toward remedying that serious shortcoming, in my systems design work.

Today, we have $0.99 MCUs, and even cheaper sensors, that offer adequate performance and compactness for augmentative technologies for those with perceptual impairments. A cheap #FitBit can indeed be used for just such a purpose, in addition to monitoring the wearer's steps. #AI could make this entire segment of technology much, much more capable, not to mention eminently more affordable.

So, why do all these assistive technologies cost more than the sale price of one's first-born on the open market?

I must say, I am heartily ashamed for my own part, or rather, that which I should have had, in service of society, but did not.

Penance....

OK so I splashed out £23 on a replacement for my #Fitbit that will no longer work on my #Samsung S6 because it will not upgrade to #Android 11.
SMS Phone operation Pulse SPO, steps and on an on. About 7 days battery life. Works fine on Android 9

Must be something I don't understand but why would anybody cough up £799 for an #Apple Watch Ultra 2?

OK so it's a bit of a house brick

#watch woes.

So #Fitbit decided it would no longer work with my superb #Samsung S9 phone - thank you for nothing #google

All I want is SMS + call notifications and (oh yes) the time. Steps would be good

Had two #withings build quality rubbish and post #brexit maintenance non-existent.

.. and NO - I don't want a house brick on my wrist.

fitbit now needs Android 11 to work

Looking at getting a new smart watch and #amazfit has been touting AI in all their newer models. It looks like the “Bip5” is possibly too underpowered to run AI shit. So that’s the one for me.

Anybody have opinions?

I’m currently using a Garmin Forerunner 45S. It’s mostly fine. But battery life is less than a week. Often as little as 3 days. Its menus are cumbersome with 5 buttons on the side. The Amazfits look new, different, and not part of any major tech company (yet… that’s why I traded in my #FitBit for a #Garmin)

Open to opinions. I don’t do massive workouts, I’m not looking for a nagbot or a training program. I just want stuff like heart rate, blood O2, step tracking, and basic connectivity to my iPhone (to see messages, buzz when the phone rings, etc).

I will not consider subscribing to #fitbit until they implement dark mode. If they can't do that after all these years, how can I trust them to get anything right?

"Apple #Watch 92%. #Fitbit 72%. #Oura ring 86%. #Garmin 112%. That’s quite surprising for the Apple Watch, which was the closest of those tested. And even then it’s shortchanging you on how much work you’ve done!" Still: I have (several) #VOX measurements, but no #iOS way to enter them I know of…

This has to happen sooner or later. My fitness tracker logged my sexual activity as a bike ride.

Apparently, my “ride” was 1.16 kilometers with average speed of 2.9km/h

#Fitbit sent me an email encouraging my new drum playing habit. "Keep it up!" they said.

How embarassing. Now I have to take my Fitbit off my wrist any time I "play drums".
