I wrote a new blog post about how I feel I'm writing "image to image", and how I'm okay with that.

This new image is what I created after being inspired by the prompt word "Sea" for 2023 Folktale Week. I am not able to do the prompts all in a single week, and I'm not doing them on Instagram anyway, so I don't feel like I'm missing out... hehe...

Wonderfully, the prompt words this year were directly influential on my adaptation/variation of Little Red Riding Hood, which I'm currently writing and which is the topic of the blog post on my website. This particular image is a part of the story where Little Red and her two Apprentice Woodchopper friends start to step out of their world and into something completely off the path.

I am having SO much fun doing these!!!

This is an image inspired by the 2023 Folktale Week prompt word, "Sea".

I missed the actual week-long event, but I'm kinda happy I did because I can take my time and really explore the words. I used the prompts to flesh-out my Little Red adaptation I'm really excited about where it's going!

Hydra are many-headed water monsters. When you cut off 1 head, 2 more grow in its place! Since this is an ocean hydra, I played games with salt while painting it.

For the #FolktaleWeek23 #FolktaleWeekSea prompt I made a linocut of one of my favourite mythological creatures: the Zaratan, here in my print a giant sea turtle disguised as an island. giant sea turtle zaratan that looks like a small island. There's a small campfire on the supposed beach, and a sailing ship from the age of exploration nearby. The sunset sky is in vibrant fuchsia, tangerine and purple. 🧵

'SEA - Monsters'
They are beings from folklore believed to dwell in the sea and are often imagined to be of immense size. I feel that the vast oceans could be a metaphor for our unconscious minds - the true place of origin of all monsters...

An illustration of a small slice of cloudy grey night sky over the open ocean. Under the surface, with the moonlight falling through, the sea is filled with 5 vast, monstrous, gnarled, ancient looking fish. Each of them has a long snout-like appendage, laced with a row of needle-like teeth. Four of them have these snouts crossed together. The fifth fish breaks the surface, holding its snout out of the water at an angle. Attached to it, blowing in the wind, is a stylised ribbon with the word SEA on it. The fish have their eyes closed in a way that suggests dreaming - except for one that looks off into the distance with a huge , troubled eye.

Together they sailed across all the oceans and seas of the world. They had many adventures, just as they had dreamed. As the years went by the boy worked his way up to Sailing Master, in charge of navigation and directing the course of the ship. It was a prestigious but difficult job and he started to think of leaving his life at sea behind. “We have been travelling many years my dearest swan.” Said the boy “I would like to retire and perhaps put down some roots in a sleepy village by the mountains.” But the swan was not ready to end her adventures. “There will be plenty of time for that later. ” Said the swan. “We should sail the world for one more year, while you are still young.” The Boy could never say no to the swan, and so they soon set off on their final journey.
