#GNUProject

From the founding of the GNU Project in 1983, through the 1990s and into the 2000s, the main goal of Software Freedom activists was to replace proprietary software on people's computers, with software compiled from Free Code.

@fsf I have just read as much of stallman-report.org as I can stomach, apparently this is not new information but it's new to me and many others. Richard #Stallman and the board and voting members of the #FSF who supported his reinstatement need to be replaced. This is heinous stuff to be enabling and trying to sweep under the rug.

CW for the report: sexual assault, pedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality

Looks like Libre.fm, an open-software version of Last.fm by the GNU Project, is being reworked to support ActivityPub!

roadmap.libre.fm

#LibreFM #LastFM #Fediverse #SocialWeb #IndieWeb #ActivityPub #GNU #GNUProject #Music #FediMusic

Screenshot from the linked article reading:

"Next steps

• I [Matt Lee] want you to have a personal website and have your listening habits on your own website, not my website. But I know some people won't want that, which is fine but Libre.fm is effectively a silo (other than Last.fm which it talks to, although federation with other instances has been possible for a long time) and has over 372,000 registered users and 302 million scrobbles.

• Some new features will only work if you're publishing your Libre.fm stats on your own website.

• A new version of Libre.fm's front end will appear later, powered by Ruby on Rails.

• [highlighted] We're also going to put our full attention to supporting ActivityPub where possible. [end highlight]"Continued screenshot from the linked website, reading:

"• Libre.fm will evolve from a single project into a larger project with a few distinct aims:

1. Being a good IndieWeb citizen.
2. Being a genuinely useful tool for artists (payments!)
3. Being a good member on the social web, which means supporting ActivityPub where it is useful. Maybe you could share what you're listening to on the social web?

(For those of you who've used Libre.fm since 2009, you'll remember the GNU social project we started back at the start of Libre.fm (or GNU FM). Personally I hope you also remember our roots in the history of the social web. GNU social continues to this day, but I'm no longer involved and no longer using the software. Happily, GNU social now supports ActivityPub so things are coming full circle.)

What you can do today

1. Get a personal website.
2. Get an account on the social web and follow me!
3. Read https://bored.city and send me feedback.
4. Donate to keep the lights on. https://libre.fm/donate.php -- our expenses are low, but a few dollars here and there helps buy new domain names, renew things, pay for the outgoing email service, etc."

También el 27 de septiembre de 1983, Richard Stallman publica el Manifiesto GNU en net.unix-wizards dando comienzo al Movimiento por el Software Libre. Del proyecto original al actual no queda casi nada.

Happy 41st anniversary to the GNU! 🎉 On this day in 1983, a revolution in software freedom began. Richard Stallman's vision has inspired generations of developers, users, and advocates. 🙏

The GNU Project has enabled countless innovations, from #Linux to countless other projects that have transformed the way we live, work, and communicate. 🌐

Here's to many more years of software freedom! 🎉 #GNU #OpenSource #GNUProject #FSF #SoftwareFreedom #FOSS #PublicCode #ilovefs #DigitalRights @fsf

A happy birthday card for the GNU project, featuring a black and white illustration of a gnu's head, set against a blue background with orange circle and clouds. The banner reads "GNU 41th Happy Birthday!". The background is a vibrant blue, and the clouds are simple white shapes. The gnu head is drawn in a cartoon style, with large eyes and a friendly smile. The banner is simple and elegant, with a black background and white text. The card is a fun and festive way to celebrate the GNU project's birthday.
