20) An offer is great, but then you have a decision to make. Fast.
And I gather that it's not uncommon to have to make that decision before you hear about other options.
Generally, I try not to post about a stage (i.e., job talk) until a few weeks after I've experienced it. Time to process and such. But this one is in real-time. And boy it's tough.

17) After a campus visit, don't underestimate the value of... laying around all day in sweatpants.
You might experience a wide range of emotions. You'll have tons of experiences & interactions to process.
But at last, at least for a day, there's no one you have to impress. Revel in it.
Eat comfort food. Watch trash tv. Get yourself a treat. It's part of the process.

15) Grief is involved.
Jobs you don't get. Potential futures that disappear. Relationships that change or become strained during this time.
And maybe you don't let yourself fully process the grief yet, because there's no time before the next application, interview, or talk... but I can see how a recovery period will be crucial, no matter the outcome.

13) It's more confusing than I expected to decide how much to share abt your progress. Interviews, rejections, etc.
I'm on the market w/a good friend (see no. 8). We share pretty openly w/ea other.
Beyond close friends, it's trickier. Some people are discreet & respectful. Others are nosy & even judgmental.
You have to figure out your own comfort level.

9) Going back to the #JobTalk, I like Betty Lai's advice emphasizing the need to tell a story with your talk.
I generally enjoy presenting my research to an audience (mostly as an escape from writing), but the job talk is a completely different genre. Still learning the rules but getting better.

I use memos a lot in data analysis, but an unintended benefit I only just recognized today is a psychological one.
Memos feel way more low stakes than adding paragraphs to my dissertation chapter drafts. I'll probably cut and paste today's memo directly into my dissertation, but I wrote it with none of pressure I'd normally feel to "get it right."

I'm laughing thinking about how a friend's department chair thought all their grad students were financially secure & no one had second jobs... then every student except one raised their hand to say they had a second job.
Props to the graduate programs that have removed the meaningless rating questions for #RecommendationLetters for #PhD programs! I'm amazed at the programs that have substantially expanded the number of questions that they ask.
