I have yet to read Grammar of Time. Am curious how it situates causal inference in Comparative Historical Analysis in the causal inference landscape

Preparing presentations on of research papers, and I find myself wondering again, is there an equivalent for to this book?

Marjan Nadim held a brilliant lecture about generalization in qual research at OsloMet today. My photo librabry is now fully stocked with methodological one-liners.

Marjan, standing in front of a slide with the following quote: "[Qualitative researchers'] attitude towards generalisation is rather like that of the Victorian middle classes towards sex. They do it, they know it goes on, but they rarely admit to either" (Williams, 2000: 210)

A student of mine wants to practice the steps of descriptive phenomenological analysis.

Does anyone have an interesting suggestion for about 2000 words of narrative for trial analysis?

Bonus points if content is or -related, but not a necessity.

Doing thematic analysis? Join me on 22nd September for my methods training using MAXQDA. All my qualitative software training is methods focused - because you can't use digital tools powerfully outside of your methods context.

Landscape as archive: find the old Caserne des Douaniers in Perly.

The same place as the following picture, focussing on the house. The house is now painted in light colours with green shutters, some of the decorative gabling has been removed. Tall trees are growing around it, partially obscuring the facade. But the shape remains and it is noticeably the same distinctly-shaped building. An archive sepia picture of the Caserne des Douaniers in Perly, near Geneva, dating from before 1914. The road is broad with old houses two-story houses. The Caserne was built to house border guards, in a distinct three-storey style with decorative gabling applied below the roof.

Gary Alan Fine - TEN LIES OF ETHNOGRAPHY: Moral Dilemmas of Field Research

journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.11

#ethnography #qualitativeresearch #QualitativeMethods

Abstract: As Everett Hughes noted, there is an “underside” to all work. Each job includes ways of doing things that would be inappropriate for those outside the guild to know. Illusions are essential for maintaining occupational reputation, but in the process they create a set of moral dilemmas. So it is with ethnographic work. This article describes the underside of ethnographic work: compromises that one frequently makes with idealized ethical standards. It argues that images of ethnographers—personal and public—are based on partial truths or self-deceptions. The focus is on three clusters of dilemmas: the classical virtues (the kindly ethnographer, the friendly ethnographer, and the honest ethnographer), technical skills (the precise ethnographer, the observant ethnographer, and the unobtrusive ethnographer), and the ethnographic self (the candid ethnographer, the chaste ethnographer, the fair ethnographer, and the literary ethnographer). Changes in ethnographic styles and traditions alter the balance of these deceptions but do not eliminate the need for methodological illusions.

Achievement of the past weeks: Finally migrated from a proprietary #QDA to #QualCoder for a new project. And took half of the research team along😋
I still need to adapt some of my working habits to match the software's functions to our approach. But we're more or less set. And others in the department are watching.
The trigger was that I had to change QDA anyway since I moved job. And securing enough licenses for the whole team was a headache.

The "Reviewer's guide to " provides a concise summary of what to learn about and how to plan & report studies employing 31 (2nd ed. apparently 35) methods: routledge.com/The-Reviewers-Gu

Since it is a book, it will be difficult for many to get access. Does anyone know whether at least the checklists have been published somewhere ?

And is there a version?

I use memos a lot in data analysis, but an unintended benefit I only just recognized today is a psychological one.

Memos feel way more low stakes than adding paragraphs to my dissertation chapter drafts. I'll probably cut and paste today's memo directly into my dissertation, but I wrote it with none of pressure I'd normally feel to "get it right."
