Weekly Update from the Open Journal of Astrophysics – 27/09/2025

It’s Saturday again, so it’s time for a summary of the week’s new papers at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. Since the last update we have published five new papers, which brings the number in Volume 8 (2025) up to 141, and the total so far published by OJAp up to 376.

The first paper to report this week is “The Bispectrum of Intrinsic Alignments: Theory Modelling and Forecasts for Stage IV Galaxy Surveys” by Thomas Bakx (Utrecht U., NL), Alexander Eggemeier (U. Bonn, DE), Toshiki Kurita (MPA Garching, DE), Nora Elisa Chisari (Leiden U., NL) and Zvonimir Vlah (Ruđer Bošković Institute, Croatia). This paper was published on Monday 22nd September 2025 in the folder Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics. It studies the bispectrum of intrinsic galaxy alignments, a possible source of systematic errors in extracting cosmological information from the analysis of weak lensing surveys.

The overlay is here:

You can make this larger by clicking on it.  The officially accepted version of this paper can be found on the arXiv here.

The second paper this week, published on Tuesday 23rd September 2025 is “Reanalysis of Stage-III cosmic shear surveys: A comprehensive study of shear diagnostic tests” by Jazmine Jefferson (University of Chicago, USA) and 13 others for the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration. It is also in the folder Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics; it describes diagnostic tests on three public shear catalogs (KiDS-1000, Year 3 DES-Y3 s, and Year 3 HSC-Y3); not all the surveys pass all the tests.

The corresponding overlay is here:

You can find the officially accepted version on arXiv here.

The third one this week, published on Wednesday 24th September 2025 in the folder Astrophysics of Galaxies, is “Is feedback-free star formation possible?” by Andrea Ferrara, Daniele Manzoni, and Evangelia Ntormousi (all of the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, Italy). This paper presents an argument that Lyman-alpha radiation pressure strongly limits star formation efficiency, even at solar metallicities, so that a feedback-free star formation phase is not possible without feedback. The overlay is here:

You can find the officially-accepted version on arXiv here.

Next we have “Microphysical Regulation of Non-Ideal MHD in Weakly-Ionized Systems: Does the Hall Effect Matter?” by Philip F. Hopkins (Caltech, USA), Jonathan Squire (U. Otago, New Zeland), Raphael Skalidis (Caltech) and Nadine H. Soliman (Caltech). This was also published on Wednesday 24th September 2025, but in the folder Earth and Planetary Astrophysics. It presents an improved treatment of non-ideal effects in magnetohydrodynamics, particularly the Hall effect, and a discussion of the implications for weakly-ionized astrophysical systems.

The corresponding overlay is here:

You can find the officially accepted version of this one on arXiv here.

The fifth, and last, one for this week is “The Local Volume Database: a library of the observed properties of nearby dwarf galaxies and star clusters” by Andrew B. Pace (University of Virginia, USA). This one was published on Friday 26th September (i.e. yesterday) in the folder Astrophysics of Galaxies. It presents a catalogue of positional, structural, kinematic, chemical, and dynamical parameters for dwarf galaxies and star clusters in the Local Volume. The overlay is here:

You can find the officially-accepted version of this paper on arxiv here.

And that concludes the report for this week. I’ll post another update next Saturday.

Yay! Finally got my #ESP32 #HallEffect "magnetometer" up and running, just in time for #Gaussfest! Ah, OK... Anyone planning to bring a Tesla coil to #EMFCamp?

Photo showing a weird laptop with a small device resting on it. The device is an M5Stack Fire powered by an older ESP32 chip that has the now-deprecated built-in Hall Effect sensor. On the small device's screen is a plot of the sensor readings and the heading "Spicy Magnetometer (Deprecated)". There are also some tetrapods made of cheese on the weird laptop's screen. They look like they could be very tasty.

TIL: Older #ESP32 devices have a built-in #HallEffect sensor. Might be interesting to see what kind of readings it comes up with at #gaussfest :SoElectric:

Despite being targeted as a wireless microcontroller, the ESP32 includes an integrated hall effect sensor that can detect external magnetic fields. This enables proximity sensing and positioning applications to be implemented without requiring an additional analog sensor.

The sensor is comprised of a small hall effect transducer located within the metal housing of the ESP32, shown below:

👀 Flydigi just teased the Vader 5S — an Xbox-licensed controller that showed up on their socials. It’s not the same as the long-rumored Vader 5 Pro, but it looks solid: tension rings, CZ buttons, and a 3.5mm jack are all there.

📅 According to Flydigi Thailand (not officially confirmed), the Vader 5 Pro might launch in October 2025. Some leaked photos on Bilibili show familiar features and possible TMR sticks.

I have to say, I'm pretty angry about the fact that #Nintendo decided against using #HallEffect or TSM switches for the joy-cons. I thought they had at least learnt the lesson, but it seems they are insistent on using those cheap and fragile magnetic strip switches... I'm very disappointed.

My #8BitDo #SN30Pro started drifting down on the left joystick about 2 weeks ago. I've had it for about 2 years, right before they came out with the ultimate software (which this model isn't compatible with) and at the time, I wasn't doing enough serious gaming to warrant a higher end device. In fact, I was compelled by the RPi compatibility. I'm going to do some maintenance (firmware refresh, check internals) and see if I can resolve it. The controller has put in a lot of good work and it serves most needs. It could be worth an upgrade, there's nothing special about 8BitDo joysticks compared to others, but I'm pretty sure I didn't choose to get the #hallEffect ones which are designed to reduce (though arguably not able to eliminate) drift. Any device with joysticks (like the PSP) that's "travel sized" still don't make me less afraid of damaging joysticks when traveling. I'd consider passing it on to a friend curious about controllers. It's a great starter, especially for indie gamers.

One for the #homeassistant #iot bubble: What manufacturer and/or series has decent #matter #thread sensors these days? To be clear, I don't want any proprietary bridges.

Initial focus would be on #halleffect or even #mems sensors, air #temperature #humidity #particle and #co2, and movement ideally through #mmwave

Decent pricing or a reliable Chinese source preferred.

#retoot appreciated

A new Time Extension news report about Hyperkin’s hall effect Nintendo 64 joystick mod crossed my feed reader. When I first read the article, I thought I had previously written about this in The New Leaf Journal, but it turns out that I had written about an 8BitDo hall effect mod. I happen to be a fan both of good hall effect controllers and the original, unique, Nintendo 64 joystick. The latter point gives me some pause about the Hyperkin mod. I quote from the Time Extension report: “Mimicking the GameCube’s analogue stick, you’ll be able to ‘feel the nostalgia and comfort of the GameCube era while dominating your favourite N64 games. This stick is designed for maximum comfort and a competitive edge, making long gaming sessions a breeze.'” While I prefer the GameCube controller to the Nintendo 64 controller, the Nintendo 64 had a more interesting (albeit less durable) joystick. If we are releasing mods, I would prefer one that preserves the feel of the original instead of replacing it with a more generic GameCube-style joystick, durability aside.
