By now everybody knows that I'm a PPE freak. ANSI Z87.1 EN388 cut level 5 are all parameters I know by heart.

You have to, when you work with torque wrenches, to fasten threaded rods, that can go all the way up to 3000 Newton Meters, you work with rotating and drilling machines then can go all the way up to 10000 RPM / DPS with just A relative Small Guard surrounding about half of the tool, ride trucks with multiple trailers, ride many different types of race machines, ...

I myself avoid those small grinders that go to 12000 RPMs I would rather use a huge heavy duty grinder that goes just six and a half thousand RPM. Lower RPM means relative safety, of course that also means more torque per revolution

I've run a sweet training session a couple of days ago
It was on the time trial race machine, which makes it easy to run at these speeds. At this point in time the bike has a mountain steering setup which means it doesn't have the commandeurs and time trial handlebars, making the performance even more valuable.

De krater van Vix (Musée du Pays Châtillonnais)

Vorige week zondag bezocht ik het Musée du Pays Châtillonnais in Châtillon-sur-Seine. Het is een museum zoals er in Frankrijk vele zijn, met een collectie die varieert van opgezette vogels via laatmiddeleeuwse sculptuur en zeventiende-eeuwse prenten tot herinneringen aan een buiten Châtillon allang vergeten generaal. Maar er is één pronkstuk: het enorme bronzen mengvat (“krater” in jargon) dat bij het dorpje Vix is gevonden in het graf van een dame die ietwat voorbarig “Prinses van Vix” is genoemd. Mogelijk gaat het niet om een vrouw, zoals aanvankelijk aangenomen, maar om een man.

De Prinses van Vix – zo zal ik haar toch maar noemen – moet tegen het einde van de zesde eeuw v.Chr. hebben gewoond in het met een Murus Gallicus omgeven heuvelfort dat bekendstaat als Mont Lassois. Een jaar of twintig geleden is daar een opvallend grote woning opgegraven die, met wat fantasie, mag worden aangeduid als haar paleis. Dat weten we natuurlijk niet zeker, maar het is wel zeker dat Mont Lassois lag in de regio van Lotharingen tot en met Beieren waar schitterende elite-graven zijn gevonden uit de Late Hallstatt-periode. De mensen die hier werden bijgezet, beheersten de handel tussen de noordelijke regio’s, waar allerlei grondstoffen vandaan kwamen (textiel, barnsteen…), en de steden in het Mediterrane zuiden.

Torque (Musée du Pays Châtillonnais)

De Prinses van Vix, die rond de vijfendertig jaar oud is geworden, behoorde tot deze elite. En deze reine-prêtresse liet het breed hangen. Ze werd bijgezet in een houten kamer onder een forse grafheuvel, samen met een wagen, aardewerk en mantelspelden. Haar gouden torque, die invloeden verraadt van de Skythen op de oostelijke steppe, is alleen al voldoende reden om een bezoekje te brengen aan het Musée du Pays Châtillonnais.

Maar het gaat me vandaag om dat mengvat, dat in 1953 is ontdekt, en werkelijk enorm is: met een hoogte van 1m65 kon er 1100 liter water en wijn in. Ik heb mijn vriend S. (vijf jaar oud) verteld dat hij erin zou kunnen watertrappelen. Het voorwerp komt uit Zuid-Italië of Sparta, en bestaat uit een sokkel, het eigenlijke mengvat, omgeven door een band met reliëf, oren en een deksel. Het geheel lijkt op zeker moment uit elkaar te zijn gehaald en vervolgens, toen de onderdelen in Gallië waren aangekomen, weer te zijn samengevoegd. Dit is althans wat je zou concluderen aan de hand van de letters die op de diverse delen staan.

Een gorgoon op de krater van Vix

De decoratie is fenomenaal. Op de twee oren staan gorgonen afgebeeld, de reliëfband is versierd met hoplieten en strijdwagens, elk getrokken door vier paarden. Helemaal bovenaan, op de deksel, is een klein beeldje van vrouw in een Grieks gewaad (een peplos).

Mijn docent Mediterrane archeologie, Douwe Yntema, had een leuke speculatie over dit mengvat. De Griekse onderzoeker Herodotos van Halikarnassos vertelt namelijk iets over een mengvat dat de Spartanen cadeau hadden willen doen aan koning Kroisos van Lydië. Dat zou echter zijn gestolen door de mensen van Samos, en dat was aanleiding tot een Spartaanse interventie.noot Herodotos, Historiën 3.47. Yntema vertelde erbij dat het onbewijsbaar was, en persoonlijk geloof ik er niks van, maar dat de Spartanen na de diefstal een militaire operatie organiseerden, dat wordt alleszins geloofwaardig als je de Krater van Vix in Châtillon ziet staan.
