In 2016 we booked a reasonably late deal cruise on the fairly new ship Royal Princess for a week in the Mediterranean. Mediterranean cruises are port-intensive ones so we had a stop on the very first day at Naples. We opted to take a tour that visited a cameo workshop then took us on a guided walk around Herculaneum. Herculaneum, like Pompeii, was buried under volcanic ash in 79 CE when Vesuvius erupted.

We're in the ruins of an ancient Roman city looking along a narrow street between buildings. The walls either side aren't fully intact with parts barely above head height and they're made of pale, sandy-coloured bricks, mostly arranged as expected but some at angles to form diamond or diagonal patterns. The street consists of narrow strips of flat, raised pavement either side of a recessed surface with a slight curve on it up towards the centre, made of larger blocks of cobblestones. It's about the width of a cart pulled by a single horse. There are some tourists gathered towards the end of the street and one woman is walking this way on the opposite pavement to us. A raised bank at the end of the street is topped by tall thin trees against the patchy sky and more trees at ground level can be seen over the top of the corner of the wall to the left of us. A sign on the wall reads "Insula VI."

Ancient โ€œglass brainโ€ mystery: how Mount Vesuvius turned a manโ€™s brain to glass

In 79 CE, Mount Vesuvius erupted with devastating consequences, wiping out the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and killing thousands. One victim, a man in his early twenties, was found in bed inside a building called the Collegium Augustalium. Scientists uncovered his remains in the 1960s and stumbled upon a baffling discoveryโ€”his skull contained pieces of what looked like black, glass-like material. A recent study published in Scientific Reports offers new insights into how his brain might have undergone a remarkable transformation, turning to glass through a process known as vitrification...

"A unique dark-coloured organic glass, found inside the skull of an individual who died in Herculaneum during the 79 CE Mount Vesuvius eruption, likely formed when they were killed by a very hot but short-lived ash cloud. The conclusion, from research published in Scientific Reports, is based on an analysis of the physical properties of the glass, thought to comprise the fossilised brain of the individual".

AI reveals first look inside 2,000-year-old Herculaneum scroll

One of the worldโ€™s oldest scrolls, dating back two millennia, originating from the lost Roman city of Herculaneum, long considered unreadable because of the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, has yielded the first decipherable words thanks to new technology. By employing artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced X-ray imaging techniques, scientists have been able to virtually unroll the fragile papyrus and reveal lost words in ancient Greek.

The charred scroll, known as PHerc. 172, is among many unearthed at the Herculaneum ruins, a city that, like Pompeii, was destroyed in the eruption. The intense heat carbonized the scrolls, making them too brittle to physically open. Among the first words deciphered from PHerc. 172 are แผ€ฮดฮนฮฌฮปฮทฯ€ฯ„ฮฟฯ‚ (โ€˜foolishโ€™), ฮดฮนฮฑฯ„ฯฮฟฯ€ฮฎ (โ€˜disgustโ€™), ฯ†ฮฟฮฒ (โ€˜fearโ€™), and ฮฒฮฏฮฟฯ… (โ€˜lifeโ€™). All of these words suggest that the scroll could be a work of the philosopher and poet Philodemus of Gadara, one of the leading Epicureans of the 1st century BCE...
