I've always been intrigued by what looks like an old keystone grotesque incorporated into this 21st century building on High Street in Glasgow. I've yet to be able to find out anything about its history. It does, however, bear similarities to some of the Tontine Heads now house in St Nicholas Garden just a bit further north on Castle Street.

Cardiff teen jailed for Swansea drug dealing tells arresting officers ‘I don’t give a f***’

19-year-old Ashton Banfield, from Butetown, was stopped by plain-clothed officers on Swansea’s High Street on March 27. During the stop, a quantity of cannabis and crack cocaine were found in his jacket pocket.

He was also found to be in possession of a large quantity of cash, as well as two mobile phones.

Arresting officers were told by Banfield “I don’t give a f***”, Swansea Crown Court heard during a sentencing hearing.

Banfield pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply a Class A drug, possession of a Class B drug, and possession of criminal property.

Banfield was previously handed a 12 month referral order in February 2023 for the supply of crack cocaine, and sentenced to 30 months’ detention in a young offenders institution in August 2024 for possession and supply of crack cocaine

Sentencing Banfield to four years in a young offenders institution, Judge Geraint Walters said Banfield had “no moral compass” and that “I dare say you thought you were Mr Big again”.

Sergeant Geraint Thomas from South Wales Police said: “Ashton Banfield’s intentions in Swansea on the day of his arrest were clear – he was there to deal the Class A drugs he had in his possession on the city streets.

“It is fortunate that our officers stopped him when they did – if he had been left to continue with his illegal activities, we would have a lot more of the drugs filtering into our community.

“We hope he changes his ways whilst in prison.”

Artisanal matcha heads to Swansea Palace’s ‘Da’ coffee shop

With matcha consumption in the UK up 200% since 2023, Independent coffee shop ‘Da’ is launching a new ‘matcha menu’ featuring 100% ceremonial grade matcha tea.

After opening in 2023 in Cardiff’s Central Square, the well-loved coffee shop recently opened its second outlet in the newly renovated Swansea Palace on the city’s High Street. Da say that the Swansea location focuses on perfecting its drinks offering as the newest coffee shop in town.

With consumers increasingly seeking healthier alternatives to traditional coffee drinks, Da’s timing couldn’t be better. This new matcha menu highlights what Da does best, creating quality drinks using local ingredients and making items from scratch rather than using pre-made mixes.

What makes Da different from your typical coffee shop isn’t just their Coaltown Coffee (roasted just up the road in Ammanford), but how they make the majority of their items from scratch. Now, they’re bringing this same approach to matcha, the Japanese green tea powder that has become a global wellness sensation known for its antioxidant properties and natural energy boost without the jitters often associated with coffee.

“At Da, our name means ‘good’ in Welsh, but our philosophy is about pursuing excellence in everything we create,” says Dylan, Head Chef at Da Cardiff. “We could easily buy pre-made syrups like everyone else, but that’s not what we’re about. We take the time to craft our own syrups from Welsh fruit using a traditional Korean technique called ‘cheong.’ This method partially ferments the fruit as sugar levels increase to stop the fermentation process, with no heat applied to keep the syrup tasting as close to the natural fruit as possible. It’s more work, but you can really taste the difference.”

Dylan’s commitment to scratch cooking extends beyond syrups to include hand-made butter, jams, chutneys, relishes, and mayonnaise, all prepared with the same dedication to quality and local sourcing that defines Da’s approach to food and drink.

“We’ve spent the past two years figuring out what matters to us and our customers,” adds Dylan. “With matcha, we wanted to do it right. That means taking our time with each step – sifting and whisking in the traditional way, not just throwing powder in milk and calling it Matcha. Whether you’re in Cardiff enjoying our food or in Swansea just grabbing a drink, we put the same care into everything we make.”

While in a local clothing chain store (one of the very few left in our town ) the manager mentioned the M & S cyber attack, which started a conversation - in the course of which someone in the queue expressed their regret that there were so many long established chains and local shops closing down. Unfortunately for her she was collecting something she’d ordered on line. Manager pointed out very nicely that on line shopping was much to blame for that. Then he added that he got nothing for his part in on line sales, and actually lost out. They didn’t count in his sales and he was actually docked a sale each time the customer returned the item via his store- how unjust. Edinburgh Woollen Mill #EWM

The Stephen Collins cartoon: "Meet the Big Not-So-Friendly Giant ruining our high streets"

#Shopping #HighStreet

A long cartoon with a dozen panels, showing a hugely tall figure dressed in black with a pointy black hat. He plays a horn and wanders around a high street at night. Because the cartoon is so long and the panels are essentially described in the captions, I'll just post the text from each:

They say there's a man who appears in the night,
In our towns up and down this great nation,
With his magical horn
blowing tunes of decline
And high street enshittification...

He's changing the bookshop in dead of the night
And the butcher is now called Vape Lizard,
He's re-named Smiths after a man he's made up [TG Jones],
And the pub is a rates-dodge called: WIZARDZ.

The Shop Changer's coming!
The Shop Changer's coming!
He loves vapes and American candy,
And when he bends down
'neath his trousers you'll find
An Amazon locker - so handy!

So next time you find you've got something to buy,
Just wave your QR near his crack,
Then run from the high street as fast as you can,
And never, ever go back.

[Stephen Collins].
