A nice article in AP about hokulea, although calling it a "canoe" is a bit of an understatement. It's an ocean-crossing vessel: "How a canoe helped turn Hawaiian culture into a source of pride and even influenced Hollywood"

Feeling so thankful and empowered and blessed and fierce about both being in Hawai'i as part of an intercultural leadership development/ exchange program, and also getting to see in person Hōkūle‘a right before her 50th birthday. (https://hokulea.com/history/)
Just learned about these great people and project from the book 'Blue Machine'. Amazing skills and journey here.
Hokule‘a completes first leg of statewide voyage | Honolulu Star-Advertiser
> More than 100 people lined Hanalei Pier on Kauai around 10:30 a.m. today to greet the Hokuleʻa after its 21-hour sail from Sand Island.
Off the charts: how a Polynesian canoe inspired a renaissance in traditional seafaring #Hokulea #PolynesianVoyagingSociety #Hawaii
Partly powered by donuts we walked the wharf this morning. The fog settled in and brought a chill to our warm October weather. It is difficult to get weary of photographing the Monterey waterfront.

If you want to read more about the #hokulea her birth and travels, as well as a beautiful portrait of the Hawaiians in their journey to regain their lost knowledge of wayfinding, or journeying across oceans, navigating by the stars. This book is wonderful read. #CHICKENSKIN

Yay! I saw it and got to talk to another longtime fan of the #hokulea and the abilities of #Polynesian navigators. Amazing to think that they were so skilled that this 60 foot beauty could carry them all across the #PacificOcean. #hawaii #indigenous #sailing
The #hokulea is in #Victoria. After some chores this morning I’m headed over the #Malahat to hopefully see it and maybe meet some of the crew. It’s been a long wait and I thought it would bypass southern #VancouverIsland. Will post some photos if it’s still there. #Hawaii #indigenous
Okay. I’ve got a bunch of chores to take care of today but should be done in time to get to #Nanaimo for the arrival of the #hokulea. Not sure what time but I’m tracking the progress from #CampbellRiver. Bonus that it is also #snuneymuxw days. Canoe races, food trucks, artists. #hawaii #indigenous #VancouverIsland #pnw
#Hokulea update. They left #Alaska after visiting our #Tlingit relatives, visited #Haida rellies in Old Massett, #Tsimshian cousins in Prince Rupert then down the coast through #Haisla and #Heiltsuk territory. Next stops are in #Kwakwakawakw territory then down into the #SalishSea. Following a route used for centuries by #Indigenous peoples. I’ve done this route many times as a young fisherman but not for many years.
The #hokulea is in #Alaska now visiting our #Tlingit relatives and will be heading south down the coast in August thru November. This amazing vessel and the people who sail her are an incredible connection to #hawaiian ancestors who navigated the #PacificOcean. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to see her and welcome the crew ashore. #pnw #VancouverIsland
Hokulea is starting a new voyage, this time circumnavigating the Pacific. She is being transported to Juneau to start the circuit.
#Hokulea Hōkūleʻa ke kaulana will be coming my way in September! From #khon2news : “Hōkūleʻa, #Hikianalia and about 400 crew members will sail an estimated 43,000 nautical miles around the #Pacific, visit 36 countries and archipelagoes, nearly 100 #indigenous territories and more than 300 ports” and there’s a high level itinerary in their news story: https://bit.ly/3yYlm7P
New episode on “Land & People”: Penny Rawlins Martin from Molokai on the stewardship lessons that voyaging on the 1976 Hōkūle‘a sailing canoe can teach us as one of the first two Hawaiian women to make the 2500 mile journey from Hawai’i to Tahiti. Available now everywhere you listen to podcasts❤️🌸🤙
