“Ryan Norbauer is well known in the keyboard community for his aftermarket housings, but the Seneca is his first ready-to-type board.

To hear him tell it, it’s the latest logical step in a decadelong process to build his own endgame #keyboard, of which the business — #Norbauer & Co. — is an almost accidental byproduct.”

“A big part for me of the allure of keyboards is the connection to my childhood nostalgia about being really excited about computing,”

Norbauer tells me via video chat. So the Seneca is big, chunky, and has a standard tenkeyless layout, rather than something more compact or exotic, because that’s what he’s always used, and what brings back that feeling. “I feel like I can more authentically make an optimal keyboard if the first one I make is exactly the one that I want.”

Does the large button initiate a large volume flush (and the small button the water-saving small-volume flush) or does the size of the buttons reflect their relative importance - a nudge to the user to choose the larger, water-saving, button not the smaller?

Thank you, thank you, Brownsword Centre staff for your handwritten sign clarifying the issue and bringing me solace.

Good Morning, all

I am indebted to the Royal United Hospital in Bath for their excellent healthcare and compassionate hospitality delivered to one very sick bear in January but above all for resolving an enduring perplexity that troubling me for years.

Which button does one depress on the two-button toilet cistern if you want the water-saving flush to operate?

New preprint from our lab: "In-situ Feedback about Mental Model Cohesion in Emergency Response Teams" osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/pdxe

Team members answered questions about their task work during a scenario exercise. Teams performed better when team leaders were presented with the degree of cohesion in team members responses at freeze points during the exercise.

#HumanFactors #TeamLeadership #EmergencyResponse #AppliedPsychology #SocialPsychology

Screenshot of preprint with abstract:

Effective emergency response teamwork relies on the team members’ mental models, such as having accurate situation awareness and shared mental models of the task, situation and teamwork. The present study developed and field-tested an approach to measure and monitor mental models in-situ. This was done by comparing the information that different team members had about their tasks and compiling the information to a “cohesion report” for the team leader. Data was collected during ongoing training scenarios across 14 training sessions for second-line emergency response teams (N = 134 participant recordings). The study developed and demonstrated a way of measuring cohesion. The study also tested the effect of providing the team leader with the team’s level of cohesion during the training session. Replicating a previous finding, we found that team-membership influenced team members’ shared mental models. This indicates that certain team factors contribute to some teams having higher cohesion than other teams. The experimental manipulation of providing team leaders with access to the cohesion measure improved the team’s mental models (when excluding the team role with most variation). Such tools could be used to evaluate and enhance mental models in emergency response teams, and further research could explore how team leaders could benefit from in-situ monitoring of the team’s mental models.

New preprint from our group: osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/hwzs

A field-experiment tested whether a brief stress management intervention could improve police performance in a simulated training exercise for police students. We found self-rated stress to be associated with lower observer-rated performance. The "tactical breathing" intervention led to improved performance. The intervention was not associated with perceiving stress as lower.

#TacticalBreathing #StressManagement #PolicePsychology #AppliedPsychology #HumanFactors #preprint #preregistered #FieldExperiment

Screenshot of preprint. Abstract:

It has been suggested that tactical breathing may reduce acute stress for police officers and thus lead to more optimal performance in critical situations. We tested the effect of a brief intervention on task performance in a simulated training scenario. Ninety-six advanced police students participated in a preregistered between-group experiment during a simulated training scenario. Expert observers evaluated performance, and participants reported their level of stress. The results showed that stress was associated with lower performance. The participants that used tactical breathing performed better than the control group, while it did not change their self-reported stress. This could indicate that tactical breathing improves performance by increasing focus and attention.
