What is ? It's a textbook sales model that automatically adds the cost of digital content into tuition and fees. It's becoming more common, and deserves the facts on how it impacts students and faculty. Enter InclusiveAccess.org.

involves automatically billing students for textbooks, even if the course has no textbooks ("Equitable Access"). This doesn't really always save money for students, plus the college gets kickbacks: pirg.org/massachusetts/edfund/
The Dept. of is proposing to change it from opt-out to opt-in next year sparcopen.org/our-work/2024-u-
but what surprised me is that two associations & Educause argued against the change www2.ed.gov/policy/highered/re

Another amazing keynote from @rajiv, this time at the ALT #OER24 Conference in Ireland (There’s also a great section in this recording, before Rajiv, from eCampus Ontario which I highly recommend).

I love Rajiv’s use of a persona to tell the fairytale-not-so-fairytale story of an educator navigating higher ed, trying to “teach in a way, to quote bell hooks, that respects and cares for the souls of their students.”

I’m also a particular fan of the way Rajiv characterised the turn in the story, from aggressive commercial publisher marketing to the discovery of OER at OEWeek:
It was at that first session that they met *a librarian* 🤓🦸‍♀️🪄📚

A couple of other key quotes I noted:
- On institutions supporting educators to do the work in open ed: “Educators cannot be left to do it alone or even the brightest flame will burn out.”
- On automatic textbook billing: “Large publishers have sought to repaint themselves as the saviours of those suffering at the hands of their own business model… Inclusive Access, for me, is akin to leasing a faulty fire extinguisher from a serial arsonist.” 🔥🧯👀🙊

Please, go watch the thing. You’ll be inspired, infuriated, and incited to action — All in.

I generally appreciate Phil's takes on edtech, but this comes off as seriously tone deaf. The "inclusive access" model was designed to keep the publishers in business, not improve the student experience. Marginal cost savings (when buying oranges instead of apples) is not a long term solution or anything that needs to live on. Make it opt-in, or kill it. onedtech.philhillaa.com/p/high

Oh. My god. Nicole Allen's POWERFUL #OpenEd23 sesh on #InclusiveAccess "The textbook market doesn’t work like a normal market because students are captives." ~But what about the discounts we get?~ I hear you say. Well: “If each institution gets 20% off, it’s basically just The Price”🙌

Hey y'all, CAPTION YOUR IMAGES, INCLUDING YOUR TEXT HEAVY IMAGES (there's even a button to do the text capture for you! All you have to do is make a TEENY effort!). And if you don't have time or spoons, use the hashtag # alt4me to get someone to help out in replies. (Then you can edit the text in, btw.) #CaptionYourImages #accessibility #InclusiveAccess

#AcademicChatter: Anyone at a campus where #BarnesAndNoble Book Bundle #InclusiveAccess is happening? They've apparently proposed to my campus that every student get charged $500 flat fee for books and it's opt-out. We are wondering: How much info do students get, especially about the opt-out? What has been the student response? What's the opt-out rate? Does the bookstore get student data, which classes they are in? What happens if the bookstore sells out?

Other than and excellent meme art, student data privacy is one of my jams. The publishers are syphoning data from students across the U.S. and not much is being done about it. Check this out:

One observation: the "equitable access" or "inclusive access" initiatives in higher ed which automatically bill students for textbooks is fully dismantled by this article. Marginal cost savings are *not* bringing equity to education.

Kia ora koutou. A bit more about me for my #introduction (along with the obligatory pic of my cat Madam). I work to balance place & movement and in #publictransport with a focus on the messed up state of inter-regional public transport in #Aotearoa #NZ. I'm a car-free #transit nerd who believes that #inclusiveaccess & #urbandesign are key to city building. I'm also learning Te Reo #Māori, a cat lover, #city life fan, indie cinema aficionado, cafe crawler & love all forms of public transport.

What do specialists of #OERs (and other #OpenEducation experts) think of the #InclusiveAccess model? How does this study jibe with those thoughts? @actualham?
