Today is day 26 of #30DaysWild and it's again #butterfly day😻 During #hedgewatch we met this beauty. It is probably either a Zygaena purpuralis or a Zygaena minos. Only expurrts can tell the difference.
They are beautiful & both on the #RedList 😿

Vanessa atalanta, the red admiral or, previously, the red admirable, is a well-characterized, medium-sized butterfly with black wings, red bands, and white spots. It has a wingspan of about 2 inches. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. The red admiral is widely distributed across temperate regions of North Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean.

Harmonia is a genus of lady beetles belonging to the subfamily Coccinellinae.

Bombus terrestris, the buff-tailed bumblebee or large earth bumblebee, is one of the most numerous bumblebee species in Europe. It is one of the main species used in greenhouse pollination, and so can be found in many countries and areas where it is not native, such as Tasmania. Moreover, it is a eusocial insect with an overlap of generations, a division of labour, and cooperative brood care. The queen is monogamous which means she mates with only one male.

📷 Was barely able to tell this was an Eastern Tailed-Blue, evidently having had a hard life. This is a new species in my #garden, so I make sure I am supporting its lifecycle.

🐛 The caterpillars feed on the seeds, flowers, and (sometimes) leaves, of different kinds of legumes, including clover, which I have plenty of.

🐜 They also secrete a substance which is consumed by some ant species. The ants protect the caterpillars from predators to get the good stuff.

🦋 Once a small butterfly, they feed on low growing flowers. Good reason to break a common habit and keep these "weeds" around in your garden. I keep a lot of wild violets available to help.
